Patty Jenkins nearing deal to direct Wonder Woman sequel

Patty Jenkins may soon pick up her shield and lasso again.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, negotiations are ongoing with Jenkins to direct a sequel to Wonder Woman and a deal could be reached soon.

Representatives for Jenkins and Warner Bros. had no comment on the negotiations.

Ever since Wonder Woman hit theaters earlier this summer, it’s been shattering records at the box office, earning the biggest debut ever for a female director and becoming the highest-grossing live-action film ever directed by a woman. According to Deadline, which first reported on the negotiations, Jenkins should be getting a considerable pay bump for the sequel, which could reportedly make her the highest-paid female director in Hollywood.

In the past, Jenkins has been cautious to say that she isn’t officially signed on for the sequel yet, but she still has ideas about where she’d like to take the character (played onscreen by Gal Gadot). In April, she told EW, “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right. She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

“I made Wonder Woman,” she added at the time. “Now I want to make Wonder Woman 2. It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love.”

Wonder Woman was a revelation for Warner Bros. this summer, earning more than $800 million worldwide, revitalizing the studio’s DC Comics Extended Universe franchise, and become a cultural touchstone for women in blockbuster films. At Comic-Con, Warner Bros. announced that the sequel is officially set for a Dec. 19, 2019 release date with Gadot returning to star.
