Geostorm trailer turns the weather into a weapon of mass destruction

“Don’t mess with Mother Nature” is a tale as old as time, but in the new trailer for Geostorm, she becomes the most deadly weapon of mass destruction.

Dean Devlin wrote the screenplays for world-ending stories like Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, and Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla. Now, he’s making his directorial debut with Geostorm, about what happens when humanity tries to control the world’s climate through a series of weather-altering satellites.

“We built this system of satellites to stop natural disasters. Someone is using it to create them,” Gerard Butler‘s Jake, a scientist, concludes. “Someone has turned the system into a weapon,” and now everyone on the planet is at risk of being hit by devastating natural disasters — anything from flash-freezing temperatures to fiery twisters to tidal waves.

The main cast is rounded out by Jim Sturgess as Max, Jake’s brother helping to defuse the situation; Abbie Cornish as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson; Alexandra Maria Lara as ISS astronaut Ute Fassbinder; Daniel Wu as Cheng, the Hong Kong-based supervisor for the Dutch Boy Program; Ed Harris as Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom; and Andy Garcia as President of the United States Andrew Palma.

Geostorm will hit theaters on Oct. 20. Watch the trailer above.
