Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser struggles to resist the dark side

“Breathe. Now, reach out. What do you see?” Is it Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming to theaters on Dec. 15? ‘Cause you’d be right on the money. Hot off the heels of EW’s latest cover story on the mysterious sequel to The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm awakened the Force in a new teaser trailer for the Rian Johnson-directed Episode VIII.

While there are visions of General Leia (Carrie Fisher) looking regal, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) witnessing an explosion (perhaps fulfilling his request to “jump in an X-Wing and blow something up”), Finn (John Boyega) fighting Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), and Snoke (a mo-capped Andy Serkis) pulling more of his mind tricks, it all comes back to Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is training his new pupil on the seaside cliffs off his island on Ahch-To — the planet where the first Jedi temple was built — when Rey starts to feel the seductive pull of the dark side. She sees “light, darkness, and something else” in a meditation session. “It’s calling me,” she cries out as the rocks begin to crack under the weight of her raw command of the Force.

“[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character,” Hamill told EW. “And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.”

Now Rey is feeling the repercussions of that guilt, as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver) and Snoke seem hellbent on adding this new powerful Jedi-in-the-making to their ranks.

“She doesn’t really know what she wants,” Ridley says. “She really is trying to do the right thing and morally, her compass is really pointing north.”

Soon fans will have answers to their long-lingering questions when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters next month.
