Who was Julia Roberts before she was a romantic comedy legend? You're looking at her. In 1991 the actress, who had made her big debut thanks to Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman, was starring in Sleeping With the Enemy, Hook, and Dying Young.

Nov. 19, 1993

While promoting The Pelican Brief, about a law student who uncovers a conspiracy (not to be confused with Conspiracy Theory, of course), Roberts graced the cover and showed off those curls we've all come to envy.

The following year, Julia gave some sage advice to EW's readers. "Life is a great adventure," she said. "I think that people sometimes fixate on a sort of smaller, narrower view of things. It is just so huge and massive, and sometimes I get the impression that people are in this, like, big hurry to shove it all in a box and make it tiny. That's a horrible thing to do with this big, gigantic, fabulous thing! But for me to become guarded or reserved would squelch the natural instincts of a young woman. And I don't want to be a party to that. So I say, raise hell, ride on, you don't have me yet!"

Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid: The iconic duo you totally forgot about. Something to Talk About was a moment (Roberts plays a woman who discovers her husband is cheating on her) and the actress came to EW to honor that.

Roberts was technically promoting her roles in Mary Reilly and Everyone Says I Love You, but what everyone really wanted to know about was her then-relationship with Matthew Perry. "He hasn't given me his letterman's jacket or anything," she told EW. "We're not pinned. I mean, we live in two different places, but I find him terribly, terribly interesting...I love being engaged in conversation with this man, because he's so terribly clever. Wit is the key, I think, to anybody's heart, because who doesn't like to laugh? Who? Show me the person who doesn't like to laugh and I'll show you a person with a toe tag."
