Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone shares message of support for film's Native viewers

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone is sharing a message of support for Indigenous viewers, encouraging them to watch the film "when and only if you feel ready."

Gladstone stars in Martin Scorsese's crime epic as real-life Osage woman Mollie Burkhart, who was married to white settler Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio). The film is an unflinching look at the Osage Reign of Terror in 1920s Oklahoma, in which white people targeted and systematically murdered dozens of Osage people in an attempt to steal their wealth.

In a long thread posted to social media, Gladstone acknowledged that Killers of the Flower Moon can be a difficult watch, particularly for younger viewers and women. "See it when and only if you feel ready and see it with people you feel safe with," she wrote, speaking out for the first time since the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. "You'll likely have a lot of generational grief to process. You're not alone."

Gladstone added that she is particularly proud of how members of the Osage Nation worked together to craft the film — and she hopes the film's message continues to resonate. She also shared a thread of anonymous resources for any viewers who may need crisis support.

"I'm so proud of the film we made with so many Osage Nation leaders, artists, educators & community advocates," she wrote. "Never forget this story is recent history with a lasting impact on breathing, feeling people today. It belongs to them, & we all have so much to learn from it."

"In this process of learning about the horrific Reign of Terror, remember that the Osage remain," she continued. "Native People remain. And this story is a lot to take in. Be kind, and please be gentle with each other. There is much to process, and much to heal."
