Lady Gaga scores her first No. 1 song since 2011 with 'Shallow'

A Lady Gaga song is sitting at the top of the American charts for the first time in eight years.

Thanks to an increase in single sales, streams, and video views, the A Star Is Born soundtrack hit “Shallow” (performed as a duet between Gaga and her costar-director Bradley Cooper in the Best Picture-nominated romantic drama) has dethroned Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 just over five months after its initial release.

In its 22nd week on the list, the song made the jump from No. 21 to 1, the biggest bump on the Hot 100 since XXXTentacion’s “Sad!” made the leap from 52 to 1 in June 2018.

Following “Born This Way,” “Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” “Shallow” marks Gaga’s fourth overall No. 1 song (and 15th top-10 entry) on the chart, and her first to reach the position since “Born This Way” — the lead single from her album of the same name — led the domestic ranking for six consecutive weeks at the top of 2011. After its initial release in September 2018, “Shallow” debuted and peaked at No. 5 while going on to top the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and France, among other regions.

Gaga previously broke a music record when A Star Is Born’s accompanying soundtrack hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in October 2018, a feat that made her the only woman to have five No. 1 albums this decade (the others being 2016’s Joanne, 2014’s Tony Bennett collaboration Cheek to Cheek, 2013’s ARTPOP, and the aforementioned 2011 LP Born This Way).

At the 91st Oscars last month, Gaga won her first Academy Award for Best Original Song for co-penning “Shallow” with her Joanne executive producer Mark Ronson, musician Anthony Rossomando, and Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt. Gaga and Cooper’s emotional performance of “Shallow” during the ceremony’s broadcast also marked the first time the pair performed the song together on television.

A Star Is Born‘s soundtrack also returned to No. 1 for a fourth week in the United States thanks to a post-Oscars spike in sales and streams. Combined with “Shallow” hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100, this week registers the first time in her career that Gaga occupies the top slots on both the singles and albums charts.

Gaga is next set to resume her Enigma Las Vegas residency show on May 30 as she continues work on her upcoming sixth solo studio album.
