Academy elects new board of governors, requires runoff between Jason Blum, Jennifer Todd

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a new board of governors.

The new board was announced Thursday, and its members will officially assume their posts July 1. Actor Alfred Molina is among those elected to the board for the first time. He’s joined by Tom Duffield, Susanne Bier, and Bonnie Arnold.

The majority of the slots were filled by incumbents re-elected to the board, including Jim Gianopolus, Michael Giacchino, and John Knoll. Jeffrey Kurland and former Academy President Sid Ganis are returning to the board after a hiatus.

This election did result in unusual circumstances for the Academy: Big-name producers Jennifer Todd and Jason Blum tied for a slot, forcing a runoff election, which will occur next week. The last runoff took place in 2016. Blum was up for a Best Picture Oscar this past year for his work producing Get Out, while Jennifer Todd has served as one of the two producers (with Michael De Luca) behind the Oscars ceremony for two years running.

The board of governors is responsible for establishing the mission and vision of the Academy, overseeing its financials, and assuring goals are achieved each year.
