Green Book wins Best Picture at the Oscars

Green Book, a heartwarming tale of an unlikely friendship between a black classical pianist and his Italian-American driver, triumphed over singers, Queens, and Marvel heroes to win the coveted Best Picture Oscar on Sunday night.

The film, directed by Peter Farrelly, stars Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip, hired to drive jazz pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) through a musical tour in the Jim Crow south. The two tackle prejudices they both face and overcome racial and class barriers, teaching one of the other’s world and ways, and become close friends.

Taking the stage during Sunday’s Oscars, Farrelly said, “The whole story is about love. It’s about loving each other despite our differences.”

Green Book went into the 91st Academy Awards with five nominations, and also won Best Supporting Actor (Ali) and Best Original Screenplay (Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, and Farrelly).

In the Best Picture category, Green Book was up against A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma, and Vice.
