Ryan Reynolds used Hugh Jackman's broken Emmy for acceptance speech: 'Is it supposed to look like that?'

With a Deadpool mask and his signature snark, Ryan Reynolds stole Rob McElhenney’s thunder and Hugh Jackman’s Emmy for the sake of an acceptance speech.

At this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, the heartfelt docuseries Welcome to Wrexham scored five wins. Although McElhenney and Reynolds costar and co-produce the series about the Welsh football club (which they also share ownership of), their video acceptance speech doesn’t exactly give them equal time to speak.

“Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honor,” McElhenney starts in a video posted by both A.F.C. Wrexham owners. “There’s so many people to thank. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 16 years. So I’ve got a lot to say. I’d like to start by thanking—”

Before he can finish, McElhenney is interrupted by the quippy MCU mercenary Deadpool, who appears wearing a tux and holding up a broken Emmy.

"Mr. Lively couldn’t be here to accept this broken Emmy so he sent me on his behalf,” explains the Merc with the Mouth. “First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you. Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story. Cymru am byth, b----es." This means, "Wales forever" in Welsh.

He continues, “I’d also like to thank the Academy for this honor and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities. I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support and in exchange Mr. Lively promises to not f--- up my next movie.”

He finishes by calling out the Academy with a pointed warning.

“Lastly, the Oscars. You’re on notice motherf---ers,” says Reynolds as Deadpool. “Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face alone is at least worth a nod.”   

Reynolds later took to Instagram to explain that the Emmy was not broken because Deadpool is an agent of chaos, but because he borrowed the award from his pal Hugh Jackman. A five time Emmy nominee, Jackman won in 2005 for hosting the 58th Tony Awards. What happened to the statue from there? Even he doesn’t seem too sure.

“In order to accept the Emmy for Welcome to Wrexham, I needed to borrow someone else’s,” Reynolds wrote on Instagram. “Of course I called [Hugh]. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t sure if he had an Emmy. Turns out he does. He gives it to me, then asks, ‘Is it supposed to look like that?’”

Reynolds concludes, “It isn’t. It’s broken. I love this man.”

Thankfully, the love fest is set to continue in Deadpool 3, which reunites Reynolds' anti-hero with Jackman’s Wolverine on July 26, 2024.
