Lin-Manuel Miranda answers Twitter questions using only Rent lyrics

How do you document real life?

Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?

The answer, for Lin-Manuel Miranda today (for you, tomorrow for me), is Rent lyrics.

Following the news that the Hamilton cast album has surpassed Rent in total sales after 100 weeks on the Billboard charts, Miranda posted on Twitter offering to answer fan questions, with a twist — his responses would consist entirely of Rent lyrics.

His responses ranged from logical — Q: “Best part of performing live?” A: “Glory beyond the cheap colored lights” — to the absurd —Q: “What’s your favorite food?” A:”Meatless balls, it tastes the same (if you close your eyes).” Some were oddly lyrical and metaphorically perfect: Q: “What’s your biggest fear?” A: “One song before I go.”

In some cases, he merely completed lyrical refrains tee’d up for him, For instance, Q: “How did we get here? How the hell did we get here?” and A: “Christmas! Christmas eve last year.”

Tracie Thoms, who portrayed Joanne in the 2005 film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, got in on the fun, noting that Miranda’s responses were “pretty amazing.” Without skipping a beat, Miranda replied with a line of Joanne’s from “Take Me or Leave Me:” “I hate mess but I looove you.”

Hamilton is now the sixth-highest-selling cast recording in music history, behind The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Mamma Mia, Les Misérables, and Jersey Boys.
