Alec Baldwin to headline NBC's live production of A Few Good Men

Pop culture continues to need Alec Baldwin on that wall.

On the heels of his two Emmy nominations for his turn as Donald Trump on SNL, the award-winning actor is taking on the role of Colonel Jessep in Aaron Sorkin’s live TV adaptation of his 1989 Broadway play A Few Good Men. Though a date for the NBC broadcast has yet to be announced, the production will air sometime in the second quarter of 2018.

Baldwin steps into the shoes of a role made famous by Jack Nicholson in an Oscar nominated performance. The West Wing mastermind Aaron Sorkin is set to executive-produce and adapt the play that shot him to stardom at the age of 26 (he also penned the 1992 feature film adaptation).

“Alec is one of our greatest actors,” said Sorkin in a statement. “Having him play this role — live onstage for a television audience — is a dream come true. This will be a brand new take on Nathan Jessep, and I expect that Alec is going to bust through TV screens and right into living rooms.”

Baldwin is no stranger to the stage; he earned a 1992 Tony nomination for his portrayal of Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. A Few Good Men marks an ongoing relationship for the actor with NBC, building on his Emmy-nominated work on SNL and his award-winning role on 30 Rock.

He will put his own inimitable stamp on the role of Col. Jessep in a play that is still as surprising and relevant as ever, from one of the most gifted writers working today.”

Moving between Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1986, “A Few Good Men” centers on a military trial that tests the limits of fresh-faced lawyer, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, when he comes up against Col. Jessep as he works to defend three Marines on trial for murder.

NBC has aired live productions of the musicals The Sound of Music, The Wiz, Peter Pan, and Hairspray, but A Few Good Men marks the network’s first live broadcast of a Broadway drama in over 50 years. This production has been in the works since 2014.
