Shay Mosley is on the job.

EW has obtained an exclusive first look of Nia Long as Mosley, the new executive assistant director in the Los Angeles office of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Since the NCIS: Los Angeles team is still dealing with the loss of Assistant Director Owen Granger (played by Miguel Ferrer, who died in January), Mosley is someone “different from what our team has dealt with in the past,” explains executive producer R. Scott Gemmill.

“Nia fits perfectly as a strong woman with a distinctive point of view,” says Gemmill. “We play her as a Washington insider who thinks our team, as good as they are, can do better. She’s here to see them reach their full potential… whether they want to or not.”

Mosley isn’t coming alone. She’s bringing along Special Agent Harley Hidoko (Andrea Bordeaux), an assistant who is ex-military and a “very staunch supporter of her boss who’s a bit aloof. It takes the guys time to break through that military bearing,” adds Gemmill.

Long was last seen on Fox’s Empire as Giuliana Green while Bordeaux appeared in procedurals like Criminal Minds and Bones.

NCIS: LA returns for a ninth season on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 9:30 p.m. on CBS.
