More Good Omens cast news: Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett Amazon series adds Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, more

As photos hit the web of David Tennant and Michael Sheen at a formal table reading for the Good Omens Amazon series, showrunner Neil Gaiman promised to un-blur some of the other cast members surrounding his leading gents. That time has come.

Amazon confirmed the casting of Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, and Miranda Richardson in the six-part series, which is based on the apocalyptic anthology by Gaiman and writer Terry Pratchett.

Whitehall (Fresh Meat) will play Newt, described as “an unfulfilled wages clerk turned witch-hunter,” while McKean (Better Call Saul) plays “the leader of the witch-finder army who sends him on his mission,” Sergeant Shadwell. Richardson, seen opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming film Stronger, takes the role of Madame Tracy, “the psychic medium and part-time courtesan who provides a helping hand to the pair as they try to save the world from Armageddon.”

McKean, who shared a photo from the first read-through of the script, said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to join this amazing cast and creative team. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather enjoy Armageddon with than Gaiman, Pratchett, [Douglas] Mackinnon, and company.”

Sheen will play the angel Aziraphale, while Tennant portrays the demon Crowley, two beings who are having second thoughts about the Final Judgement. Other actors confirmed for the series include Adria Arjona (Emerald City) as Anathema Device, a “practical occultist and descendant of the ancient witch Agnes Nutter”; Nina Sosanya (Love Actually) as Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order of St Beryl; Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders) as Duke of Hell Hastur; and Ariyon Bakare (Life) as Duke of Hell Ligur.

Photos of Sheen and Tennant with their dyed hair were posted and then deleted online, but the leaked images remain on social media. Awaiting a more formal preview, series director Douglas McKinnon posted a black-and-white photo of the actors, along with other behind-the-scenes images from Pratchett and Gaiman.

In addition to heading Good Omens, Gaiman penned all six episodes, while Pratchett joked he’s serving as executive producer “to remind the world the book had TWO FECKING AUTHORS.” The development of this series comes after the success of American Gods, the Starz drama based on Gaiman’s acclaimed novel of the same name.

Good Omens will launch on Amazon Prime Video before airing on BBC Two at a later date.
