This story contains spoilers from the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian....

As Master Yoda once said: "There is another..."

But is there though?

The season 2 finale of The Mandalorian had a surprise post-credits scene that left fans shocked, excited, and more than a little confused.

The final moments took us back to Tatooine and showed Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) violently taking over the crime lord palace that once belonged to Jabba the Hutt (now run by Jabba's former chief of staff, Bib Fortuna, in a surprising albeit short-lived, cameo). Boba probably feels like he has good reason to be perturbed with Fortuna as Jabba's minions left him for dead in the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi.

As Fett takes the throne, the show cuts to two title cards: "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Coming December 2021."

At face value, that sounds like another Mandalorian spin-off series.

But The Mandalorian season 3 has also been announced for next December (Christmas, to be precise), provoking some confusion.

It's not immediately clear if The Book of Boba Fett is a full-fledged series ... a limited series ... or some kind of season 3 evolution or replacement for The Mandalorian itself.

We've been reassured on one point, at least: Sources told EW on Friday that star Pedro Pascal is "definitely not leaving" the show.

Previously, Deadline reported a Boba Fett miniseries was in the works and that it would begin shooting shortly before The Mandalorian season 3 started production. That report seemed in doubt after Disney announced two entirely different spin-offs at its Investor Day conference earlier this month – an Ahsoka Tano series and a project titled Rangers of the New Republic. But given this finale reveal, the obvious conclusion at this early morning hour is that we'll get The Book of Boba Fett in early December, and then it will lead into The Mandalorian season 3 launching later that same month. Expect more to come on this.

Something else of note: Before season 2 began, showrunner Jon Favreau told EW that The Mandalorian would take a page from Game of Thrones in terms of how the HBO drama began with most of the characters together and then sent them off into various distinct storylines. At the time, it sounded as if the writer-director was talking about storylines within the series itself. Now it seems Favreau meant spinning off characters into their own separate shows during the same timeline and eventually bringing the characters all back together – so a similar approach to GoT, but on a more ambitious and macro level.
