Description
Three nude figures are rendered in an expressionist style, with two standing and one seated on the ground. Bold lines and contrasting colors mark the bodies and the environment, which is split by a green foreground and blue background. The seated figure appears to be examining something on the ground, while the standing figure to the right seems introspective or concerned.
Bathers with a Turtle is a painting by Henri Matisse from 1907 to 1908, in the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1908 it was acquired by Karl Ernst Osthaus who included it into the Folkwang Museum in Hagen, Germany.
Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (31 December 1869 - 3 November 1954) was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.
