They were subsequently handed over to the care of North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team. Despite their preparation, the group had encountered challenging conditions beyond their initial expectations. Tom Kerley, a crew member, highlighted the sudden transition from sheltered to rough conditions as they rounded Fidra Island, making it unsafe for the kayak to proceed without risking swamping or capsizing. "Conditions offshore can vary significantly from those closer to shore and can change rapidly," Kerley emphasized, urging water enthusiasts to remain vigilant and alert authorities promptly in case of difficulty.

The suspects used the lift-gate from their box truck to pull the ATM out of the ground and fled the scene. Officers quickly located the box truck in the 1500 block of Essex Street. One of the suspects fled on a bicycle stolen from a transient and was taken into custody nearby. The other suspect is still outstanding. There are no further details at this time.
