Greece: Influx of tourists, high prices lead to rental market crisis in Athens
Athens, Greece - Recent Residents of Athens are feeling the strain as an influx of tourists engulfs the Greek capital, and many locals say they are struggling to find accommodation and feel squeezed out of the rental market due to high prices. Filmmaker Kostantinos Kardakaris said he had to leave his apartment because the owner decided to renovate the flat to get a higher price if he sold it or rented it as an Airbnb. While Kostantinos was fortunate to find a roof over his head after being pushed from his downtown apartment, the young professional still felt like a victim of Athen's rental market. The Greek government welcomed tourists to return after COVID-19 receded, many residents are now frustrated with the influx. While this surge boosted Greece's economy, it sparked a significant housing crisis. Many families and students have been forced out of their hometowns, as real estate companies turn their homes into co-working spaces and Airbnbs for visitors. Short-term holiday rentals have increased in Athens by 10 percent compared to last year, prompting "No more tourism" and "Ban tourists" movements like those in other European cities. The housing market has increased sharply in the past few years, as the country emerged from a decade-long financial crisis and the pandemic. In the past five years alone, prices nationwide rose over 45 percent, with this year alone seeing a 15-percent increase. While this problem has many layers, from short-term rentals to high demand and high cost of living, some real estate consultants said there might be a solution. Shotlist: Athens, Greece - Recent: 1.
