about

"Their 1990 CD in Grassetto is exceptionally good improvised chamber music, the fruits of winnowing. She has been in no hurry- 'I had made two F.C. Gerania records, so I knew what a record meant'- had tried different musicians and written and discarded lots of pieces. Clearly structured but not overdetermined, sonorous but driven by interplay, slinky melodies: she got it right the first time.
(...) the Kwintet gives the impression of a string band; rather than using viola as a horn, she'll use saxophone as violin, often voicing viola and alto together in close dissonance, with closely matched dynamics -and no vibrato, the better to disguise the source, and to give it a spotless surface." - Kevin Whitehead in New Dutch Swing

(...) Her compositions inspire performances which are anything but ordinary, the collective improvising often breathtaking. The balance between melody and abstraction, rhythmic drive and ballad tones, keep it all sounding brilliantly right. In Grassetto feautures exciting bass clarinet Hein Pijnenburg, with Bart van der Putten's alto, Wilbert de Joode's bass, and Fred van Duynhoven's drums. They execute Henneman's turns magnificently. The leader has an original touch on viola. - Doug Lang in CODA Magazine 1999

After exploring composition with the pop group ‘F.C. Gerania’, Ig Henneman, with her jazz quintet, now dares to command all the melodic possibilities the viola has to offer. - Frans van Leeuwen NRC Handelsblad 22 March 1986

(...) Her first album, recorded in 1990, is the closest thing to jazz Henneman ever recorded, in part because the band—Hein Pijnenberg on bass clarinet, Bart van der Putten on alto saxophone, Fred van Duynhoven on drums, and bassist Wilbert de Joode—is the closest in instrumentation to a jazz combo she ever used. But the quintet is no more a jazz band than [her] Tentet is a jazz big band or the String Quartet a classical ensemble. Already you can hear Henneman’s impatience with received form on compositions such as “Ghiribizzoso,” in which minimalist repetition gives way to looser ensemble exposition and the unexpected arrival of a lengthy drum solo, and “Muur,” in which touches of swing are subverted and discarded. The keen ear for color and texture and the resolutely non-swing momentum—part classical, part something indefinable—that mark her most mature work is heard in compositions like “Himalaya” and in her solo on “Brug (voor Nedly).” - Ed Hazell Signal to Noise #61 Spring 2011 about the box set Ig Henneman Collected (Wig 18) 2010

This quintet is uniquely exciting because it switches rapidly between themes and solos. Modern interpretations are packaged in a classical construction of theme, improvisation and theme conclusion or paraphrase. There is an excellent balance between pure melodic material and sound patterns, and abstract departure points of tone formation and sound.
- De Gelderlander, 12 November 1987

In all Ig Henneman’s music, she dares to set off tender, subdued passages against fiery, contrasting collective improvisations. That’s why her succinct, professional arrangements offer every musical possibility. - Kees Polling Trouw 23 October 1989

Within the exciting framework of Ig Henneman’s composition skills, five remarkable solo musicians form a solid quintet that convincingly argues the case for contemporary improvisational music. - Willem van Koppenhagen De Gelderlander 18 May 1990
