Did you know that up to half of family members of ICU patients may develop PTSD during or following their loved one's hospitalization? However, communication and self-care efforts can significantly mitigate this risk. July is Self-Care Month, a time to emphasize the importance of well-being for everyone, especially those caring for loved ones in the ICU. According to the World Health Organization, self-care is "the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness with or without the support of a health worker." At EyeControl, we recognize the challenges faced by family caregivers who often feel compelled to remain at the bedside around the clock, potentially missing work and other responsibilities. However, it is crucial that family members focus on self-care during their loved one's illness, ensuring they get exercise, proper nourishment, sleep, and attend to other responsibilities and activities.
