What Myha’la Herrold Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Myha’la Herrold — who recently partnered with Colgate’s My Smile is My Superpower Campaign — about her favorite no-white-cast sunscreen, shielding lip balm, and go-to snack.

During the day, I use Lansinoh Lanolin lip balm. I found out about it through a makeup artist on a shoot years ago. I don’t remember what it was for or who it was, but it really stuck with me since. I’m not sure the exact ingredients, but it seems to create a shield over your lips so that they’re not susceptible to drying or cracking. It’s the most gentle formula. It feels like the stuff baby ointment is made out of.

I use a couple different sunscreens, but Black Girl Sunscreen is one of my favorites. That one’s really great for people who are blessed and melanated because it doesn’t have a white cast. I wear SPF every single day, whether it’s sunny or overcast.

Any silk pillowcase will do. I think the brand that I use is called Silvon, but I have a couple of different ones because I change it every three days. My esthetician was like, “You must change it every three days. Period. Point blank.” And I was like, “Yes, ma’am.” It’s mostly for skin care. I’ve also just gotten used to the feeling of it. It’s very soft. I try to create the most luxurious, inviting environment for sleep, because I don’t have the easiest time falling asleep.

If there’s any light coming in my room, I will wake up immediately. I need it pitch black, so I always sleep with this on. There’s also something about the slight pressure on my face that is quite comforting. I’m really, really wrapped up at night.

This is a new addition to my life, but it’s now become a staple. I grew up in California, and my mom was always like, “Don’t drink the tap here. It’s full of all kinds of things like heavy metals and microplastics and whatever, because it doesn’t come from anywhere close by.” I was always like, “Ugh, it’s just water.” Then I moved to the East Coast, and the water over here is so good. I could tell the difference. I recently started filtering my water because my nutritionist recommended it, even though I live on the East Coast. I got this AquaTru water filter and compared it to the tap. Before the tap even touched my lips, I could smell this metallic scent that I was accustomed to drinking for so many years. The thing that really did it was my cats. They’re so bougie. I give them the filtered water, too. But I noticed on days when I’d give them fresh water from the tap, there’d be a pink-ish edge around their bowl. That doesn’t happen anymore since I give them the filtered water.

I always, always have music in my ears. I’ve been listening to Jordon Bolden, particularly this one song called “Morning Affirmations.” It’s just about taking each day and treating it as if it were your last day, living it to the fullest. It’s such a beautiful way to wake up. I like these because they’re wireless. The wires are too complicated. If I have a crossbody on, it’s going to be chaos. I do like the noise canceling, but I’ve learned it’s important to at least be mildly aware of your surroundings and not completely tune out. I’ve got myself in some sticky situations because I didn’t know what was going on around me, and suddenly I was like, Ah, get me out of here.

Having warm feet is essential for me. I don’t have a specific brand, but I just look for socks that are soft. My ADHD brain doesn’t like things that aren’t comfortable on my body. I don’t wear tight jeans or anything constricting because I feel like I’m in a sort of prison. Same goes for my feet. I just want them to be soft.

I find that more often than not, I don’t have time to eat. This is my little snack on the go. It gets me some protein until I have my next meal. I also like the texture. They feel a little meatier compared to other nuts.

I’m as militant about my oral health as my skin care, but I have really sensitive teeth. I’m super-duper prone to cavities, because I have sensitive cavity-prone enamel. It’s annoying because I’m aggressive about brushing and flossing, and even swishing water after I eat stuff with sugar in it. Colgate has a line called Total Plaque Pro-Release that’s good for people who have sensitive teeth or are cavity prone. It helps you manage the plaque, which is the thing that builds up and causes cavities. This has been so great for my oral-health routine, and I have been cavity free for six months, so that’s good for me.
