Much like the classic plain white tee or the pair of incredible-fitting denim jeans, bodysuits have earned their spot on the wardrobe must-have list.

These one-piece tops are an excellent choice for those who love a tucked-in look but don’t want the hassle of having to re-tuck or bunch fabric. Bodysuits also make for a great base layer, especially since they often lay snug against the skin and don’t create too much extra fabric when adding a sweater, blazer, or leather jacket on top. And depending on their construction, some can provide compression, shaping, and smoothing benefits, too.

Experts Say

"Bodysuits are a staple item that I recommend to all of my clients," celebrity stylist Samantha Brown tells PEOPLE, noting that their versatility makes them one of the most tried-and-true pieces in any wardrobe. “With high-waist denim or trousers, bodysuits seamlessly tuck in, giving a streamlined silhouette without bunching."

With all this in mind, we researched dozens of bodysuits across every category to find the best bodysuits for everybody. Since it’s a tad tricky to narrow things down (there are so many good options out there), our PEOPLE Tested team decided to take each selection out for a real-world spin to see which bodysuits are actually worth buying. Ahead, see which ones made the cut.

Star Qualities
  • Soft and comfortable material

  • Seamless under clothing

  • Fits true to size

Red Flags
  • Sizes only up to XL

  • Straps aren’t adjustable

The Lululemon Wundermost Bodysuit is a great choice for those looking for a versatile bodysuit that goes with lots of different looks and is comfortable enough for everyday wear. While we wouldn’t consider it for workouts, the bodysuit is constructed from a soft and comfortable athleisure material that is sweat-wicking and quick-drying, so it’s a fantastic fit for hot days.

The bodysuit also features a four-way stretch and is flexible enough to move with the body but has a tighter fit that feels supportive. It also features a thong bottom, so it goes undetected under clothing and has added side seams designed to contour the body.

Sizes: 2XS-XL | Colors: 4 | Style Features: Square neck, tank, thong

Star Qualities
  • Buttons are easy to snap into place

  • Lots of stretch for lasting comfort

  • Chic neckline

Red Flags
  • Sizes only up to XL

  • Stretches out after one wear

As its name suggests, the Second Skin Bodysuit from Quince form fits the body for a sleek and comfortable fit. We love that the material is super stretchy, so it has plenty of flexibility and doesn’t constrict in any way, making it a great choice for all torso lengths.

The bodysuit features a chic square neckline and comfortable long sleeves that fit snugly around the arms. From a functional standpoint, it also has snap buttons on the crotch that make the garment easy to get in and out of.

We love the buttery, soft, and stretchy material, but it’s a little on the thin side. Because of this, bra straps and bands are visible under the bodysuit. Since it is thin, we also noticed that the bodysuit stretches out after one wear, so you have to wash and dry it frequently to help it maintain its shape.

Sizes: XS-XL | Colors: 4 | Style Features: Square neck, long sleeves, thong, low back

Star Qualities
  • Double-lined material

  • Buttons are easy to snap into place

  • Holds its shape well

Red Flags
  • Runs large

  • Material is a bit thin

If you want to try the bodysuit trend without breaking the bank, the H&M Jersey Thong Bodysuit is the best budget-friendly style. This long-sleeve bodysuit features a classic high-scoop neckline, snap buttons in the crotch for convenience, and thong bottoms, so you can’t see it under jeans and trousers. It’s also constructed from a polyester and spandex blend, so it’s lightweight and breathable with plenty of stretch.

We found that this bodysuit runs a tad large, so consider sizing down. Despite its baggier fit, it holds its shape well, and we never felt like we had to wash and dry it to shrink it back into place.

The bodysuit is also double-lined, which makes it feel like a higher-quality item considering its price. However, it is still on the thinner side, so if you prefer a bodysuit with thicker fabric, this might not be the right choice for you.

Sizes: XS-2XL | Colors: 3 | Style Features: Long sleeves, scoop neck, thong

Star Qualities
  • Made from 95 percent cotton

  • Seamless fabric

  • High-quality construction

  • Enough compression to wear without a bra

Red Flags
  • Sizes only up to XL

  • Fits a little tight at first

This bodysuit from Abercrombie & Fitch is made from a soft jersey fabric and is one of the most comfortable and breathable options we tested. It’s constructed from 95 percent cotton with lots of good stretch, so it has a lightweight and flexible feel. The neckline also combines a square and scoop silhouette, so it has more versatility when styling.

The bodysuit might have breathable construction, but it doesn’t skip out on compression. In fact, we found that there was enough support to slip into the bodysuit braless. And, if you prefer to wear a bra, you can’t see the straps or band through the material.

Since the bodysuit is slightly compressive, it runs a little small and fits tight at first. However, after one wear, it feels more relaxed, so this is easily remedied.

Sizes: 2XS-XL | Colors: 3 | Style Features: Scoop neck, long sleeves, thong

Star Qualities
  • Comfortable, seamless microfiber fabric

  • Raw-cut thong bottom

  • Not restrictive

  • Fits well, even on long torsos

Red Flags
  • Not very compressive

For the best off-the-shoulder bodysuit, go with this ballet style from Commando. The bodysuit is constructed from a nylon, cotton, and elastane microfiber blend that is so soft, seamless, and comfortable that you forget you’re wearing a bodysuit. We love that it features a raw-cut thong bottom, which we find more comfortable than seamed bottoms. It also has plenty of stretch and flexibility, so it’s not restrictive at all.

When testing this bodysuit, the first thing we noticed was the fit. It had enough support to go braless but was still stretchy enough to fit our bodies. We were also impressed by how well it worked with longer torsos without the restrictive, pulling effect we often experience with other one-piece styles.

As much as we appreciate the stretch and support, we wish the bodysuit had a little more compression to create more of a shaping effect.

Sizes: One size | Colors: 1 | Style Features: Off-the-shoulder, three-quarter sleeves, thong

Star Qualities
  • Tall sizes available

  • Ultra-soft material

  • Convenient snap buttons

  • Plenty of stretch without pulling

  • Excellent quality for the price

Red Flags
  • Nothing to note

If you love a good white T-shirt, try the Gap Modern T-Shirt Bodysuit. This versatile bodysuit features a tight-fitting silhouette on top with brief bottoms to create the best tucked-in effect while styling. We love the classic scoop-neck style and the soft material that fits well over the body without restricting or pulling. The bodysuit is available in regular and tall sizes, too, so it’s one of the best bodysuits for long torsos.

Similar to other styles on this list, it also features snap buttons on the crotch, which is a must when wearing a T-shirt-style bodysuit. These snap buttons make it possible to slip into the bodysuit with ease and are functional enough to wear all day without worrying about bathroom breaks.

Sizes: 2XS-2XL | Colors: 2 | Style Features: T-shirt style, scoop neck, brief bottoms

The More You Know

If you plan to wear a bodysuit with a bra, Brown says to make sure you try the garment on with a bra. A bra — especially a padded one — can change the way a bodysuit fits, so you want to ensure you have the right size before you wear it out.

Star Qualities
  • Sizes up to 5XL

  • Ultra-comfortable

  • Soft and supportive without restricting

  • Fantastic fit

Red Flags
  • Sleeves are a little long and not as form-fitting

Available in sizes up to 5XL, this bodysuit from Good American is one of the most comfortable options we tried. Its stretchy nylon material is soft, supportive, and compressive enough to offer a shaping effect but never feels restrictive, which isn’t as common with shapewear styles.

The fit is also incredible and glides onto the body like a glove. Our only complaint here is that the sleeves are a little long and not as form-fitting as the rest of the bodysuit. The material is also thick and supportive enough to go braless, even if you have larger busts (one of our testers has size 38DD breasts!).

While it has a higher price, you totally get what you pay for — the combined material and construction quality make this bodysuit feel like a luxe piece of clothing. It also holds up well, even after several washes and tons of wear, so it’s a fantastic investment.

Sizes: XS-5XL | Colors: 2 | Style Features: High crewneck, long-sleeve thong

Girlfriend Collective Cream Penny Square Neck Bodysuit

Star Qualities
  • Available in thong or brief bottoms

  • Sizes up to 6XL

  • Made from recycled water bottles

  • Built-in bra

Red Flags
  • Shrinks a little in the wash

Girlfriend Collective is another one of our favorite brands for inclusive size ranges. The Penny Square Neck Bodysuit is available in sizes up to 6XL and features light and comfortable support. This bodysuit option stands out amongst the rest because you can choose between a brief or thong bottom style based on your preferences and styling needs.

In addition to its size range, the bodysuit also features impressive construction. First, it’s cut from sustainable fabric woven from plastic water bottles. On top of that, it features light and supportive construction and a built-in shelf bra, so you can go without a bra if you want or have a layer of extra support.

The bodysuit also holds up well in the wash, though we did notice some slight shrinking. With regular wear, the fabric never pills or loses its integrity, so you can always count on this bodysuit to keep its shape and provide that lightweight shaping compression.

Sizes: 2XL-6XL | Colors: 5 | Style Features: Scoop neckline, tank, thong or brief bottoms

Star Qualities
  • Stretchy and flexible material

  • Lots of colors available

  • Fits long torsos

Red Flags
  • Thin material

For a square-neck style — and the best bodysuit at Amazon — look no further than this long-sleeve style from Mangopop. Constructed from a lightweight and stretchy rayon material, this one-piece is flexible enough to fit the body without tugging or pulling (even if you have a longer torso). Albeit a little thin, the material is also breathable enough to provide plenty of airflow, despite its long-sleeve silhouette.

In addition to its square-neck style and comfortable fit, we also love that this option comes in so many different colors. Whether you’re looking for a classic like black, want a more vibrant hue, or prefer a print, you can find 33 different colors and patterns to choose from.

Sizes: XS-2XL | Colors: 33 | Style Features: Square neck, long sleeves

Star Qualities
  • Fits true to size

  • Inclusive range of nude colors

  • Thick and soft material

  • High-quality construction

Red Flags
  • Tank straps aren’t adjustable

After testing lots of different bodysuits, none of the tank styles stood out quite as much as the Nuuds Seamless Scoop Tank Bodysuit. This bodysuit features a classic tank silhouette with high-quality construction and a thick and buttery soft material that makes us want to buy it in every color. It’s not a shapewear style, so it’s not meant to cinch or smooth the body, but we didn’t mind because it still provides some slight support thanks to the material quality.

During the testing period, we weren’t only impressed by the initial try-on; the bodysuit’s durability also wowed us. It not only holds its shape well after a few wears but also never pills, shrinks, fades, or stretches in the wash.

Our only red flag? The tank straps aren’t adjustable. However, we didn’t experience any major issues with this and don’t think it’s a necessary feature, considering the style.

Sizes: XS-3XL | Colors: 11 | Style Features: Scoop neck, tank, thong

Star Qualities
  • Ultra-comfortable

  • Form-fitting without restricting

  • Inclusive nude colors

  • Inclusive sizing

  • Sculpting and supportive fabric

Red Flags
  • Straps aren’t adjustable

The Skims Fits Everybody Bodysuit is one of the most comfortable bodysuits we tried on. At first glance, it looks small, but when you slip it on, it fits like a glove without digging or pulling. Despite its flexible and soft fabric, it still provides tons of support, so we could easily wear it without a bra, too. The bodysuit also features a seamless thong bottom that is invisible under clothing.

Although the straps aren’t adjustable, we didn’t experience any fit issues and actually loved that the straps are thicker, so they don’t pinch or dig into the shoulders. The bodysuit has convenient snap buttons on the crotch that weren’t just functional but were also surprisingly not noticeable.

Sizes: 2XS-4XL | Colors: 14 | Style Features: Square neck, tank, thong

Star Qualities
  • Excellent compression

  • Fits true to size, even on long torsos

  • Durable fabric that holds its shape

Red Flags
  • Feels a tad too restrictive for long-wear

For a cheaper shapewear style, consider this option from Shapermint. The bodysuit features excellent compression that fits the body and provides a smoothing and shaping effect. We love that the material is thick and durable, which helps it hold its shape even after long wear and washing. Plus, the bodysuit features lots of excellent shaping details, like 360-degree tummy control, adjustable straps that lift and support the busts, and coverage for booty shaping.

Since it is closer to a shapewear style, this bodysuit feels more restrictive compared to other options on our list. Because of that, it might not be comfortable enough to wear all day and is instead a better option for a few hours of wear.

Sizes: S-4XL | Colors: 8 | Style Features: Scoop neck, spaghetti straps, brief bottoms

Star Qualities
  • Ultra-soft material

  • High-cut bottoms

  • Super stretchy and not restrictive

Red Flags
  • Thin material

  • Button snaps aren’t super comfy

  • Works better for long torsos

For the best bodysuit with short sleeves, consider this crewneck style from ShaperX. The bodysuit is constructed from a soft and stretchy material and works best for those with longer torsos since it has so much flexibility. Aside from the material, we love the high-cut, seamless thong bottoms that are invisible under clothing (though it’s worth noting that the thong is thin, so the snap buttons feel a bit bulky).

The material is on the thin side, so the bodysuit can look a little translucent if you’re wearing the wrong bra color or going braless. However, the thinner material is still durable enough to provide a slight smoothing effect, which we loved. It also held up well in the wash and didn’t stretch out, shrink, or pill with regular wear.

Sizes: XS-2XL | Colors: 4 | Style Features: Scoop neck, short sleeves, thong

Star Qualities
  • Soft fabric

  • Comfortable button snap

  • Not restrictive

Red Flags
  • Runs a little small

If you love that tucked-in turtleneck look, a bodysuit can be your wardrobe BFF in the fall and winter. This one from Spanx is our favorite because it’s constructed from a comfortable and soft fabric that has some shapewear features like tummy-smoothing technology.

Despite its support, it’s ultra-flexible and never restricts the body, so you feel like you can actually move and breathe. The material also holds up well with regular wear and washing, and we never saw any pilling, shrinking, or stretching during the testing period.

Before ordering, we peeped the comments for sizing recommendations and are glad we did. Many customers say to size up because it runs a little small, and we can confirm that. We ended up going up a size, and it fit like a glove.

What to Know About Bodysuits

Fabric Thickness

When shopping for a bodysuit, celebrity stylist Samantha Brown says to make sure the fabric is thick enough with adequate stretch “to make sure it doesn’t go sheer.” Since bodysuits are designed to stretch over the torso and bust, thinner materials can become less and less opaque the more they stretch.

Snap Closure

Snap closure is another feature worth considering. While there are many bodysuits without snap closures that are comfortable and easy to wear, Brown says one with a snap closure can make getting dressed and bathroom visits a lot easier. If you’re looking for a bodysuit with snap crotch details, we love the H&M Jersey Thong Bodysuit as a budget-friendly option. The Skims Fits Everybody Square-Neck Bodysuit is another excellent choice for a bodysuit with easy snap closures.

Versatility

Bodysuits have so much styling potential. So, if you’re looking to invest in a more expensive option, it’s worth considering its overall versatility and whether or not it’s something you can wear casually, dress up, layer, and more. For versatile long-sleeve options, we love the Mangopop Square-Neck Long-Sleeve Bodysuit and the Spanx Suit Yourself Long-Sleeve Turtleneck Thong Bodysuit. If you want something a little more budget-friendly, consider the Quince Second-Skin Square-Neck Long-Sleeve Bodysuit.

Behind the Scenes

To find the best bodysuits, our PEOPLE Tested team researched dozens of styles before narrowing down their top picks to 30 styles for real-world testing. We assigned two testers per bodysuit to get a more realistic idea of how they fit different body types and preferences when considering comfort, quality, and durability.

  • Comfort: Bodysuits aren’t always the most comfortable, so this attribute was key in differentiating between the different styles. We considered everything from fabric to fit as well as details like snap button size and adjustable straps to find the most comfortable bodysuits.
  • Fit: In addition to preliminary details like the overall size ranges offered, we also considered what the bodysuits looked and felt like on real bodies. Each bodysuit was tested on different body types to gain the best understanding of fit.
  • Quality: There are so many low-quality bodysuits out there that feel great the first wear and then quickly lose their integrity. To avoid this, we thoroughly reviewed quality and considered how well the fabric and construction held up with lots of wear and washing.
  • Durability: Similar to quality, we also noted durability and specifically looked for styles that held their shape over time, didn’t pill, and felt supportive enough, even if they weren’t intended for shapewear.

After spending 816 hours testing 28 different bodysuit styles, we narrowed down our selections to 14 of the best bodysuits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who makes the best bodysuit?

Since bodysuits are a popular wardrobe staple, you can find high-quality and comfortable bodysuits from many fashion brands. When looking for a high-quality and versatile option with a mid-price point, we recommend the Lululemon Wundermost Ultra-Soft Nulu Square-Neck Sleeveless Bodysuit, which has some athleisure benefits — like sweat-wicking and quick-drying — that keep you comfortable while wearing it in the summer. We are also obsessed with Good American and Skims bodysuits, such as the Good American Scuba Crewneck Bodysuit and the Skims Fits Everybody Square-Neck Bodysuit. Both brands make high-quality, size-inclusive, and comfortable styles that always offer a little something extra, like shapewear.

  • What is the point of wearing a bodysuit?

A bodysuit is a versatile top that can range from your classic basic style to your most eye-catching blouse look, and there are several benefits to wearing these types of one-piece ensembles. These tops are especially great for those who want to achieve a tucked-in look without the bunching and excess fabric at the waistband of their pants. And, since many bodysuit styles are designed to fit snugly against the body, they are also excellent as a base layer for wearing under other garments.

  • What kind of bra do you wear with a bodysuit?

Depending on the bodysuit’s neckline, Brown recommends wearing a seamless T-shirt bra under one-piece tops. “Off-the-shoulder [necklines] may require a strapless bra, while plunging backs may require an adhesive bra,” she adds. Those with smaller busts might also prefer to go braless with their bodysuits, especially when they wear styles that have some built-in support.

  • Do you wear underwear with bodysuits?

According to Brown, underwear isn’t necessary to wear with a bodysuit, though some might still opt for them. “By layering underwear, you could add unnecessary bulk, and for women’s health reasons, you are better off without the double layer of fabric,” she explains. If you plan to go commando, Brown recommends looking at bodysuits with thong bottoms to avoid panty lines.
