A Florida woman is in custody after allegedly running over her 16-month-old son following an argument with her boyfriend, who was allegedly holding the child at the time of the incident.

Authorities arrested Aaliyah Ross, 27, on Monday, June 24, in connection with the alleged attack which left the child with multiple broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung and a broken collar bone, the Polk County County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Police say Ross, of Lake Wales, Fla., and her boyfriend got into an argument which soon “escalated.” The two were reportedly having a disagreement about how to discipline one of her three children, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

At some point during this altercation, Ross allegedly placed two small children in her car, while the boyfriend grabbed the couple's 16-month-child and tried to flee, the sheriff's statement says. At that point, Ross allegedly “accelerated directly at the two victims, and ran over them before she crashed the vehicle into a trailer,” the statement says.

Ross allegedly took the seriously injured boy to her residence and left him there alone, police allege.

According to an incident report cited by the Sentinel, Ross' boyfriend allegedly called her requesting that she take the boy to the hospital. In response, Ross allegedly told him he should take the child himself, the incident report says, according to the Sentinel.

During an interview with a detective after the incident, Ross allegedly said she has previously threatened to run over her boyfriend but would swerve her vehicle at the last minute instead of hitting him, the police statement claims.

Ross' boyfriend has since been released from the hospital with injuries sustained on his body and lungs, per police.

The child remains at the hospital in critical but stable condition, the Orlando Sentinel reports, citing another police statement.

Ross is being charged with child abuse, neglect, domestic battery and leaving the scene of a crash, per police.

It wasn’t immediately clear if she has entered pleas or retained an attorney to speak on her behalf.
