A Florida man accused of leaving a young girl in a hot car was charged with manslaughter after she died having had a body core temperature of over 107 degrees.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Department says the 6-year-old girl was unconscious and not breathing when she was brought to a local fire station on May 20 by Markise Outing, 24, her mother’s boyfriend. The girl, who authorities did not identify, was taken to the hospital for advanced care, where her dangerously high body temperature was taken, deputies said. She was pronounced dead that night.

Outing allegedly told deputies the girl had become overheated while playing in a park, according to the sheriff’s department. Police claim, however, that an investigation determined that Outing picked up the girl from school and allegedly left her locked in a car for several hours at his place of work, with the temperature in the car rising to an estimated 115 degrees.

A subsequent autopsy revealed that the girl died as a result of extreme heat, and police said they are still awaiting a toxicology report.

Outing was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child on June 25 and is currently in custody in the Manatee County Jail.

It is not immediately clear if Outing has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
