Next, Grim, Sam, and Emma look to the topic dominating the 24-hour media cycle in the US: Biden’s candidacy. Ryan provides his insight into the squad’s apparent choice to stand by Joe Biden even as the Democratic Establishment increasingly calls for him to step aside, and how it works to undermine the constant complaint of their “disloyalty” to the party, before diving deep into his take on the future of the Democratic nominee for President and what vaguely democratic options to replace Biden remain. Wrapping up, Grim tackles his amicable departure from the Intercept, and the future of Drop Site News.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Dr. Genevieve Guenther, founding director of the organization End Climate Silence, affiliate faculty at the Tishman Environment & Design Center at the New School, to discuss her recent book The Language of Climate Politics: Fossil-Fuel Propaganda and How to Fight It.  Then, she speaks with blogger Ettingermentum of the "Ettingermentum Newsletter" on SubStack, to discuss what comes next for Biden, the Democratic Party, and the presidential ticket. First, Emma runs through updates on the US economy, Biden’s candidacy, Israel’s continuing devastation of Gaza (amid supposed ceasefire talks), US foreign military aid, SCOTUS corruption, Project 2025, the anti-abortion GOP, and Texas’ environmental disaster, before diving deeper into developing reports of Israel’s (and Benjamin Netanyahu’s) active and months-long sabotage of supposed peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Dr. Genevieve Guenther then joins, first tackling the development of a new type of climate denial – one that embraces climate change as a concept, but rejects any urgency or action to restructure our economies as alarmist and unrealistic – and touching on the major role financiers play in keeping the fossil fuel industry alive. Diving deeper into the lies of this form of climate denial, Dr. Guether walks Emma through some highlights of this failing attitude, with supposed technological advancements like bioenergy and carbon capture further contributing to the destruction of our atmosphere. Wrapping up, Genevieve and Emma explore the demobilizing impact of this mainstream climate denial, an issue exacerbated by neoliberalism’s hollowing out of the institutions and structures of political advocacy and activism, and what we can do to activate around this issue. Ettingermentum joins, taking a moment to contextualize his thinking on the electoral popularity of Biden and both the Democratic and Republican parties writ large, allowing him to more accurately predict the results of the 2022 elections than the typical economic fundamentals model. He and Emma then dive into the trenches of the ongoing fiasco of Biden’s candidacy, the questions of its viability and whether or not it will even continue, what to make of the various (and generally absurd) arguments against replacing him, and the theoretical candidacy of Kamala Harris, before wrapping up with a greater assessment of polling and how to understand it.

It’s Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with political commentator Owen Jones to discuss the outcomes of the recent UK elections. First, they run through updates on the increasing problem for Democrats that is Biden’s white-knuckled-hold on his candidacy, Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the corruption of Clarence Thomas, environmental emergency in the US, NATO’s summit, the FTC, and the US’ green transition, before touching on Nancy Pelosi’s telling take on Biden’s future. Owen Jones then joins, first contextualizing the (predictable) implosion of the Tories in the UK’s recent elections within the long string of constant Conservative controversy (be it policy or personal) that has defined the British Prime Ministership during the post-Brexit Tory reign, before expanding on the expectations for this year’s elections, with Labour’s political strategy winning them a landslide majority despite just under 34% of the vote, a result somewhat overshadowed by the major success of Left alternatives (like the Green Party) and independents (like Jeremy Corbyn), as well as the takeoff of Nigel Farage of the hardline right Reform UK. Next, Jones steps back and parses through the role that the UK’s first-past-the-post election system played in bolstering Labour’s electoral win, and why the success of independent challengers is such an astonishing result, before expanding on the tension between Labour and the British left following the anti-Corbynist purge, as well as the role incoming PM Keir Starmer plays within that context. After unpacking the future of a ruling coalition in the UK, they wrap up the interview by unpacking the major disappointment of Brexit and the precarious nature of liberals’ desire to return to “normalcy.”
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden-Kamala ticket, unpack some hot takes from the media elite on Biden’s candidacy, with additional (and somewhat less illuminating) commentary from Dave Rubin and Dennis Prager. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Trita Parsi, executive vice president at the Quincy Institute, to discuss the recent results of the Iranian elections. Then, they speak with Daniel Nichanian, editor-in-chief of Bolts Magazine, to discuss the surprising results of the 2nd round of French elections that took place this past weekend. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Biden’s tenuous candidacy, Miriam Edelson’s $70m for Trump, NATO, major Russian war crimes, the prosecution of Sen. Menendez, deadly heat across the US, the resignation of a Trump-appointed judge in Alaska, and recreational marijuana law in a certain Matt Lech’s home state of North Dakota, before parsing through the complex role congressional progressives like the Squad have been playing in the debate on Biden’s candidacy. Trita Parsi then joins, diving right into the recent election of Masoud Pezeshkian, the context for this snap election (the death of Ebrahim Raisi), and Pezeshkian’s image coming in as a somewhat uninspiring reformist candidate, touching on the meager turnout for the first round of elections before unpacking the central role that that the threat of his ultra-hardline conservative opponent played in pulling out the necessary participation for a second round victory. After outlining the structure of the Iranian regime, the role the President plays within it, and what the “reformist” agenda for the future of the system entails, Trita, Sam, and Emma wrap up the interview by unpacking the Biden Administration’s fear of the JCPOA (Iranian Nuclear Deal), Bibi Netanyahu’s role in undermining any return of the deal, and the return of Neocon logic in US foreign policy. Daniel Nichanian then joins, examining the context for France’s recent snap elections, the rapid turnaround in Macron’s plan, and the role parliament plays in France’s political structure. Expanding on this, Nichanian explores the political strategy employed by the French left, successfully putting their differences to the side with the looming threat of the far right and pulling out an astonishing victory, and what the lack of a true majority means for the future of French governance over the next few months, wrapping up with the tension between the platforms of the left-wing and Emmanuel Macron’s coalition.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Brad Onishi, writer, co-host of the Straight White American Jesus podcast, and founder of Axis Mundi Media, to discuss his recent book Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism – And What Comes Next. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Biden’s tight grasp on his candidacy, major defeats for the right wing in the UK and France, Iran’s presidential election, the Lancet report on Gaza’s 180k+ death toll, ceasefire negotiations, Project 2025, anti-administrative attacks on trans care, Boeing’s plea deal, and the passing of Jane McAlevey, before diving a little deeper into the ongoing conversation about the future of Biden’s candidacy. Brad Onishi then joins, diving right into the pivotal moment of the 1960s-70s social and electoral movements – from Civil Rights to the ERA – that brought the aggrievement of the “religious right” in the US back to the fore, and saw the return of a true Christian Nationalist movement in US politics. Stepping back, Onishi looks at his roots in the birthplace of this US Conservative Christian movement – Orange County, California – and the major role this county played in offering an escape for southern and midwestern “implants” from “urban diversity” (Black people), as myriad conservative-driven industries boomed in post-WWII SoCal. Expanding on this era’s particular distillation of Christian Nationalism, Brad walks Sam and Emma through the proliferation of America-first rhetoric in the burgeoning Mega Church and Evangelical communities, with hyper-Americanism and theocratic rule fusing in a cogenerative movement to reclaim the country from “fake” Americans that could not be trusted with socio-political power, a perspective deeply ingrained in the modern day conservative movement. After expanding on the contemporary manifestation of this movement’s proliferation (Donald Trump, Jan 6th, the overturn of Roe v. Wade, etc), Onishi wraps up by expanding on his connection to this movement, what we can learn from much of his community’s escape-from-evangelism, how to organize the left against this threat, and the role traditional catholicism plays as a guiding force for this movement.
And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam watch NC Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Robinson speak in front of the cross about the innate American desire to kill some folks, parse through the unsurprising yet wildly devastating Lancet report on the drastic undercount of deaths in Gaza, and unpack Hamas’ acquiescence to a temporary ceasefire. They also expand on the conversation about Biden’s future, including CNN’s recent report on Biden’s underperforming polling, and where it leaves other electoral races, before watching Dave Rubin build up his expectations for the conservative contagion’s performance in Europe before it all comes crashing down in front of him, plus, your calls and IMs!
