Working with Route53 and domain registration and have a cost question

0

Right now I am working on studying for the Solutions Architect Associate exam and working on Route 53 and I was about to create a domain and noticed that Amazon immediately creates a hosted zone for it which does incur costs. If I do not create an additional EC2 instances, ENIs and don't tie anything into this zone am I correct to assume that my monthly costs would be extremely low? I am trying to get hands on training with AWS with the goal of moving towards achieving my certification and possibly moving into consulting as a Cloud Engineer. I just want to avoid incurring high costs while doing it.

Hello,

In your described case, AWS will charge you for the following components:

  1. Domain Registration: When you register a domain through Route 53, you will be charged for the domain. Pricing for domain names varies by TLD.

  2. Hosted Zone: Route 53 automatically creates a hosted zone for each domain you register. The hosted zone itself has a cost associated with it:

  • $0.50 per hosted zone per month for the first 25 hosted zones
  • $0.10 per hosted zone per month for additional hosted zones

A hosted zone includes up to 10,000 records. For each record greater than 10,000 per hosted zone, you will be charged $0.0015 per month.

  1. DNS Queries: Standard Queries cost $0.40 per million queries (first 1 billion queries per month)

For more details, check the AWS Route 53 pricing page: https://aws.amazon.com/route53/pricing/

Please note that you can take advantage of the AWS Free Tier, which provides free usage for some AWS services. See also: https://aws.amazon.com/free/
