Model Students is the tenth episode of season two of Saved by the Bell.

Summary[]

Zack convinces Belding to fire the nerds who own the student store so that the gang can reopen it. Unfortunately, no one wants to come in, so Zack and Screech secretly take pictures of the girls' swim team to sell in the "Girls of Bayside" calendars. The girls are then invited to pose for a professional photo shoot, but only Kelly is invited to Paris, which leaves Zack out in the cold.

Plot[]

Zack is at the Bayside school store where Kelly works and breaks the fourth wall, saying business has been bad since three nerds Herbert, Ronald and Norman run it, selling things that nobody really wants such as fluorescent pocket protectors and a shell clock. Zack advises Kelly to quit but she needs the money.

When Slater, Screech, Jessie and Lisa arrive, inviting them to the Max, they too see how awful the store is doing. Zack decides to convince Mr. Belding to sack the nerds and put him in charge so the store will sell better stuff and attract the students. After some consideration, Mr. Belding agrees and Zack and the others help Kelly run the store and make it look better than ever. The nerds still want to run the store, but they are chased away by Slater who is in charge of security.

However it has been a long time since the students came to the store and after noticing the lack of customers, Zack decides to create a gimmick to attract them. He has Screech secretly take pictures of Kelly, Jessie, Lisa and the other girls of the swim team and use them to make Girls of Bayside calendars to sell in the store.

Sure enough the calendars attract many customers and Zack, Slater and Screech sell them for $5 each. The three girls arrive and are impressed. However Kelly wonders why the customers all seem to be boys but they agree that as long as there are people buying their items, it doesn't matter. They soon find out why when they see large cardboard cutout stands of them in their swimsuits that are promoting the calendars. Each girl's picture is used for a particular month of the year, including Kelly as November, Jessie as July and Lisa as October. To make matters worse, because there are only eleven girls on the swim team, there is a picture of Mr. Belding's head on a picture of Jessie's body for December. The three girls are furious with Zack for exposing them behind their backs and go to complain to Mr. Belding, taking their cardboard cutout stands with them.

In his office, Mr. Belding tells Zack to recall every one of the calendars and destroy them. However the calendar attracts the attention of photographer Adam Trask who visits the school and selects Kelly, Jessie and Lisa as models for the new teen fashion magazine, so the girls encourage Zack to keep selling the calendars, but Mr. Belding makes sure to have the December picture taken out.

The three girls all get their pictures taken in various fashions and they are published in the magazine a few weeks later. Mr. Trask comes to the school again and declares that Kelly has been selected to do another photoshoot for the cover of the special anniversary edition in Paris for a month, much to her surprise and delight. This worries Zack as he is afraid Kelly will forget about him when she becomes famous so he doesn't invite the others to her next promotional shoot and tries to make Kelly feel guilty so she won't leave. Mr. Trask talks to Zack, telling him what he did was cruel but he knows how he feels. If he truly loves her, Zack needs to let Kelly follow her own path, which may lead back to him anyway.

At Kelly's house, Zack comes clean with Kelly and apologises. Kelly assures him that she'll never forget him and Zack brings in the rest of the gang where they celebrate with a farewell party.
