When exactly did the chick and the duck die?

Given their impact on the show, we feel like Yasmine and the nameless duck deserved more than an off-camera death casually revealed in the show’s final hour. Would the same have been done for Marcel? We think not!
Some good questions. Don’t get me wrong; I love Friends, still watch the reruns. But I don’t think Ross and Rachel belonged together. She deserved a greater love, not some loser who can’t figure out what he wants. Cheating on Rachel the same night they went on a “break” was pathetic and showed how much he didn’t care. And YES Chandler was a funny guy and the best part of the show. He was endearingly awkward in some situations is all.
I completely agree. I didn’t watch Friends episode by episode, just in reruns, but Rachel should not have ever gotten off that plane. Pairing her with Ross at the end, having her give up her dream job for a man who always treated her as second best and didn’t respect her career goals, was lazy writing.
Rachel never had a gun to her head it was her characters decision, in the real world people are in relationships others don’t agree with all the time. At the end of the day more fans wanted the two of them together than didn’t even if the writing and character growth leading up to it wasn’t done well.
Explain how you can “cheat” while the relationship is “on a break”. I’ll wait.
You can’t.
.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but Rachel was the more physically attractive half of that relationship, and she was ticked that he found someone first.
.
On a break means just that. They both agreed that that was what was happening, so no one cheated.
Technically, it wasn’t cheating, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t despicable as hell. Especially when Ross was cheated on by Carol and spent a large chunk of his relationship with Rachel assuming she would cheat on him. Rachel’s argument would’ve been better if she hadn’t accused him of cheating, but asked Ross if he would’ve been okay with her sleeping with someone else hours after their breakup. My guess is that it would be a hard no.
The majority of your point is just all the more reason that Ross wasn’t fit to have a relationship at all. With anyone. Ever.
.
I don’t even disagree with it.
Sorry, but if you break up with someone or tell them you want a break from the relationship, the other person doesn’t have any obligation to be faithful to you. There’s no cooling off period where people have to consider the other one’s feelings. Now, if you really want to get back together with someone, it’s obviously a bad idea and can result in hurt feelings, but it’s not cheating. Rachel (and her mom) kept saying that Ross was a cheater, which simply isn’t true.
Well, Big Mike, if he didn’t cheat, why else did he run around town trying to cover it up so bad? In his heart he knew he cheated. And so did everybody that found out the next day. Including Rachel.
7 yes and 8 yes
They finally figured it out.
Joey was happy for Rachel and Ross, because both of them realized that they could only be friends because when they had the go ahead to become a couple neither of them could go through with it. To be a real friends nerd it was Season 10 Episode 3. Also, that episode features Ross getting the spray tan.
This is what I was coming to the comments to say. In 2022 I asked out a friend after we were both recently single and starting to date again. She said “I have thought about it…” but asked for time to process. In the end, she said that she considered me her best friend, and given that she lost an entire group of friends once before during her divorce, she didn’t want to risk that with me and her current circle. While sad, I respected it, and wished her nothing but the best. Her previous ex boyfriend had been in and out of the picture etc and I knew she hadn’t been happy. 4 months later she was dating a guy who she is about to move in with and told me “I’m happy, and I’m also having the best sex of my life!” She apologized for telling me that and I was like “OMG why? I want you to be happy and having good sex!”. A few months later I met somebody wonderful too and we just celebrated a year together :)
Real friends can move past things like that. I also have another friend I briefly dated in 2016 and we realized we weren’t right for each other. We even joked to each other recently that it was so fleeting we forgot we’ve been together haha.
It wasn’t their apartment. It’s owned by someone in Monica’s family. Grandma I think. The grandma for sure is going to keep it. They wanted a place they would own and getting out of hell…I mean NY was even better.
The grandma had died. Monica and Rachel were illegally “subletting” under the grandma’s name. This was brought up in one episode when the super threatened to kick them out.
Yes and who ever owned it after that…which wasn’t them. Still owns it.
It was a rental. They never owned it. The grandma had rent control (low rent). Monica and Rachel sublet paying the same rent grandma had been paying when they shouldn’t have been.
I never understood why Joey gave Chandler the dog in the first place. It was Ross who paid for the dog when all of Joey’s stuff was being repossessed after he was killed off Days of Our Lives.
Even as a teenager, I didn’t buy that Ross and Rachel belonged together. I’m probably alone in this, but I wish they’d given Rachel and Joey more of a chance. The episode where Joey takes pregnant Rachel on a “date” and falls for her is absolutely adorable, and showcases why they could have been good together.
Yeah I thought Rachel and Joey were a more natural pairing. Ross/Rachel was never a good relationship. He was toxic, jealous, controlling
lol a natural pairing? They had to literally make her an idiot laughing at the words in Ross’ speech. They dumbed her down so much it was honestly quite bizarre
Nope you aren’t the only one. Ross and Rachel were terrible together and her getting off that plane symbolized everything that was wrong with that relationship. Yuck. I did love Rachel and Joey together although I know I’m in the minority and that was problematic with the whole Emma thing. But even if she didn’t end up with Joey, she never should’ve ended up with Ross.
Where the heck was Emma while all the airport drama & the farewell tears in the apartment were going on??
Who thought it was a good idea for R&R to have a kid in the first place?
Rachel’s Mom was bringing Emma to Paris later on.
Good question whose bright idea was it for them to have a kid together. I couldn’t stand that storyline. It took something away from the characters as far as am concern.
Emma was with Rachel’s mom, who was bringing Emma to Paris in a week, giving Rachel time to get settled. I wish Rachel had stayed on the plane.
I’m sure Ross and Rachel broke up again. They were never endgame.
Ross was my least favorite character. He was such a jerk, can’t believe they had Rachel throw away her dream job for him. Shoe jumped the shark with Rachel’s baby.
Monica and Chandler were the central couple. Getting them together was what gave the show a future.
I agree that putting Monica and Chandler together gave the show a second life. The Ross and Rachel drama drove the show for the first four seasons and Monica and Chandler carried the romance aspect of it the rest of the way. Although, the best part of the show was the chemistry between the friends and not the romances.
Where DID they go for coffee?
5. That is assuming she got it checked and certified. Phoebe is the type to “get around” those laws.
9. Raising kids in the suburbs is the dream for some. Having yards and good schools. (I was not a city raised kid)
7. And Yes she should not have gotten off the plane. But I do choose to believe they are end game. I just feel he should have gone to Paris. Put his life on hold for her not the other way around. That would have proven his worth more.
Hugh Laurie’s seatmate character was the best, and absolutely correct. Rachel was a terrible person, and the very worst.
Does it not matter that she thought better of it once she was there and realized she was wrong? Instead just told him she was there to support him…
I get the point of having them move out of the apartment from a thematic standpoint. The creators always said that the show was about the time in your life when your friends are your family, so it makes sense to end the show by having them move out of that space now that Monica and Chandler are starting/have their own family.
But realistically, it did seem dumb for them to give up that cheap, huge apartment, or for Ross and Rachel not to take it if they were going to stay across the street anyway. Saying it was “too sad” was a weak justification.
One month of trying to drag a stroller, two kids, and all of the associated accoutrements up several flights of stairs would have driven them nuts. Later on, four people in one bathroom would have done it. I’ve raised kids in a city, but them moving to the suburbs was very on point.
Remember when Ross and Rachel had a baby? They apparently didn’t, since their decision about whether to be together at the end only had to do with their constantly shifting feelings toward each other, and never took into consideration whether it was a good idea to take the infant away from her father for an entire year.
Where you get this from? Rachel said earlier in the episode that the company was willing to fly him to Paris or her to the US whenever they wanted.
Not only Ross and Rachel still together they got more kids.
My theory is that Ross and Rachel kept breaking up and reconciling and breaking up and reconciling and breaking up and eventually Monica and Chandler (and actually, Phoebe, but passive-aggressively, as Phoebe is wont to do) started to warn anyone else each started dating that Ross and Rachel were no good for anyone, much less each other.
.
“Run, run for your lives and don’t look back!” You’d think that Chandler would be giving that warning to the next Emily or the next Tag, but it would be Monica.
Why didn’t they write Rachel running into the coffee shop instead?
It would’ve bookended the series perfectly.
This would have been great
I never needed perfect bookends for a TV show.
Singling out Chandler is an interesting choice. They were all kind of jerks, just different levels in terms of how tolerable they were. That typically depended on what characteristic found the most irksome.
And of course, some of us found all of them awful, but were forced to watch because someone you actually like had the remote.
Question #2. Both can be true.
He wasn’t so much a jerk as he was just awkward. But even at that, he knew “you have to pick your moments.”
Did Rachel ever talk about Paris? Everyone says that she gave up her dream job to be with Ross but I don’t think she did.
Also, how did no one on the plane know what a phalange was?!
As soon as they had the baby they should have tried to be together..but end up friend so both could move on. Ross and girl he almost married. Emily? Her demands for him to stop seeing Rachel was correct but not possible. I do not believe they are together .
I want a spin off. Ben and Emma. One of Phobe niece (. Remember Chandlers a girl! Chandler should be a trans boy now). Monica and Chandra’s twins .. and someone not related to the group. Anyways. That’s my pitch.
Ross and Rachel are together. Once they stopped having writers in their lives messing things up for them because of the need for drama to string things out more seasons, they were able to mature and become a strong, healthy couple. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
Honestly, as much as I love the show (and I truly do), the fact that the writers worked so hard to keep their story a soap opera while getting Monica and Chandler together (who had no hints about that until the wonderful England reveal) drove me nuts. They kept them apart to keep us tuning in. I miss the sweet romance between them in the first couple of seasons. After Emma came along, there shouldn’t have been any of the complications they gave them.
This is one area where Big Bang Theory got it right. They got Leonard and Penny together and broke them up roughly the same places that Friends did. But then they put them back together and kept them that way. Healthy relationship? No particularly. But they still found other ways to keep the show going instead of teasing us with them every season ender. (And that was pretty much the only time we got much development on the Ross/Rachel front.)
Also, how can it be 20 years?
And yes, I do think about TV show characters way too much, why do you ask? :)
The only way I can accept Rachel getting off the plane, if there was also a discussion about him moving to Paris with her. They talked about that the next day, and he either agreed and are still happily together, or they broke up again right then and there.
