What Is the 'Episode 1,000' Storyline?
How does one possibly do justice to such a big number, in an episode of the mothership?
In the episode “A Thousand Yards,” NCIS comes under attack by a mysterious enemy from the past. Also, Vance (played by Rocky Carroll) tries to mend fences with his estranged son (Superman & Lois‘ Spence Moore II) by explaining why, despite the ongoing dangers of his job, he still chooses to stay at NCIS.
“One of our own beloved characters is going to end up in grave danger, and you’re go to see all of the different franchises brought into this in a little bit of a different way,” co-showrunner David North told TVLine. Added Steven D. Binder, “There’ll be a personal storyline, and this one will circle around Director [Leon] Vance.”
Since NCIS is a spinoff of JAG, wouldn’t the franchise’s 1000th episode have actually been Season 17, Episode 14 of NCIS? (Yeah, I did the math.)
This is about the NCIS television franchise.
…which doesn’t include the show that birthed it?
I wouldn’t include it. JAG had a different tone and type of story telling than the NCIS shows, while they all feel like they come from a common DNA.
Agreed. JAG was about the Navy legal system. NCIS is about catching the criminals that will land in the court… A very different look. It’s a spinoff off JAG, but the NCIS franchise grew all on it’s own, and is very different.
Well, NCIS may have been birthed by JAG, but JAG is not NCIS.
This^^^. Agreed, JeffDJ.
But without JAG there would be no NCIS at all in the first place would there? So yes, JAG counts. NCIS is part of the JAG-verse, not the other way around. At the end of the day, NCIS is and always has been and always will be a Spin-Off from JAG, regardless of however many Seasons or Spin-Offs it does of it’s own. You cannot change that part of it’s History.
How the children argue about who’s more important.
Shhee
And just imagine had nbc kept jag they’d have 3 of the longest running shows in og law and order law and order svu and ncis which between the 3 shows 69 seasons combined as reworks cancel shows after 1 or 2 seasons but these 3 law and order og and imangine had it not taken a 10 year break 24 seasons svu 25 and ncis 20 seasons
I was gonna say 1002 episodes due to JAG doing a Two part back door pilot for NCIS in jag season 8×20 unless they count them in
Haha! Andy, I love that you did the math, because I absolutely had done that too! I was so sad there hadn’t been any acknowledgment at that point, especially given Harm and Mac had made appearances on NCIS: LA in the preceding months. And that another mothership episode that month (17×12) had been about a Navy fighter jet, it could have been an interesting way to bring it full circle if they’d thought to do it. (I’m pretty sure I sent poor Matt here a question or two regarding the possibility of them recognizing it at the time! lol). That said, 1000 episodes is amazing, I love the franchise, but it still feels a little odd to leave JAG out.
Your math is incorrect because they’re two separate shows.
With that logic, they are all separate shows. Since NCIS used Harm, Mac, and Chegwidden, Jag is just as connected as NCIS LA is to NCIS. It actually had more crossover with jag than NCIS there for the longest while, if not still. NCIS used chegwidden too. So kind of dumb to exclude Jag from it in a way. Like it’s become the third cousin twice removed one only talks about on special occasions.
NCIS did crossovers with other shows (Hawaii five-o for instance). They’re still two separate shows, just sharing the same “universe” as it were. Should they also count H50 towards the NCIS episode count?!
It would be nice to see some of former JAG cast members on NCIS in more than just guest-starring roles, however. The Harm/Mac thing wasn’t handled too well, IMO.
True enough. There is that with H50. Agreed. It wasn’t handled well at all.
This sounds amazing!!
And I watched every single one of them and then binged the series during Covid. Good for them. Plus I watched every episode of JAG because of Harm (David James Elliott), a good Canadian boy!
Now I have to wonder who that “beloved” character is. If I were choosing it would be Tim McGee, because that’s the character that drew me to the show. I just hope there’s some acknowledgment somewhere along the way for Sean Murray’s 20 years on the show.
Looking forward to this mega crossover (says the person who usually doesn’t like crossovers).
They need to bring back Tony, Zeva, and Tali. The current show has no zing or zip to it. Rather dull!
They are working om a spin-off with them for Paramount+
Hope the charcter that in danger is mcgree
I guess everyone forgot, (I’ve read no mention of it) in season 9 Ducky wrote up a new will and asked Gibbs to be the executor. To which he graciously accepted. That alone should have brought Mark Harmon back.
How do you know Ducky didn’t change the executor of the will so that Gibbs would not have to come back to DC from Alaska just to file some legal paperwork with the court? It wouldn’t surprise me if Ducky changed it to Palmer for that reason.
Ziva Abby Tony TM Bishop Palmer and Caitlin. All these people should be invited to the 1,000th edition party and not forgetting LJG.
WOW UNBELIEVABLE 1,000 SHOW!!!
I missed the Ducky episode. Is there a way to watch it?

I have never commented in a TV show forum.
I want to say a big thank you for the wonderful send-off for Ducky. I have watched every NCIS show ever; including the entire franchise. I first saw David McCallum in the Great Escape, and followed his career through the Man from UNCLE on. He was a gentleman and probably one of the most handsome men in the entire planet. A class act.
Have loved all the N.C.I.S frachises & heartbroken when they left us. Need to figure out a way to bring all of them together for something
Was the character Ziva mentioned here. I have been a fan of this show for many years. How can I see this episode that I missed. The character of the Doc in autopsy was a main character of NCIS which I will miss.
Are you bringing NCIS New Orleans back. We live near Houston but my father grew up there and closely interacted with the Louie Armstrong family. There is so much more that can be created with New Orleans!
Exciting to see. Can’t wait.
Looking forward to the show.
Curious as to when The Law & Order one was? Anyone want to do that math?…..surely it’s happened already with 50+ seasons between them all.
I’m really wondering if any NCIS spinoff will be able to success the 14 seasons of LA.
“If you’re watching it in 4K, you might have to blow somethings things up,”
My Question is, if you don’t have 4K, how are you supposed to figure out what those Easter Eggs are? Some of us aren’t that High-Tech or Next-Gen.
When using a connected universe 1000th episode is always going to be open to debate.
However to me they are only counting the shows with NCIS in its title. So shows such as Jag, H05, MacGyver, Magnum won’t be counted even though crossovers happened within each and all shows to some extent.
Am looking forward to it. Would of been nice if actors from now ended shows would of had more screen time, and also a double/single episode. By that I guess in terms of a T.V movie lenth episode. Still be nice to see how meny ester eggs we will all spot, without them been pointed out.
The best candidates I can think of who would qualify as ‘extra special’ are:
Hetty
Gibbs
Ziva
Seeing Hetty would be amazing! My other thought was we should see Kensi with her & Deeks’ child. And that child should be named Owen Miguel Deeks. Make it happen, universe!
Who played Fletcher voss?
Named above….
