The Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new building, Naala Badu in Sydney, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of heritage with contemporary design. This includes the repurposing and transformation of an underground heritage World War II naval oil tank into an immersive art space. In the latest issue of The Arup Journal, we delve into this new cultural landmark and detail how our engineering design contributed to a 7,000m² increase in exhibition space. We are proud to share our role in Alaro City, a 1,000-hectare project in Lagos' Lekki Free Zone. Our infrastructure masterplan is designed to enhance the livability of the city by reducing flood risk and the heat island effect through the creation of green spaces. In response to the area’s risk of flooding, we designed a sustainable urban drainage system. The green corridors, retention ponds, and rain gardens not only help manage stormwater but also provide recreational space for residents. The result? A vibrant, eco-friendly city where work, life, and play seamlessly connect. Throughout the various roles I have taken on in my career, I’ve always wanted my work to have a positive impact on the world. Recently, Arup asked me to talk about why that's the case (a lot to do with my Mum's influence!), but also why I chose to work for them 6 years ago, why I originally became interested in the potential of digital and AI, and whether I think any of us is doing enough to try and tackle the daunting human and environmental challenges we currently face. (Answer: how can we? But we need to keep trying our best each day). So this is a more personal take on things, I really hope some of it resonates. In a first for New Zealand, the Southern Auckland Economic Masterplan brought together perspectives from a diverse group of stakeholders, including government, the private sector, landowners and iwi (tribal authorities), to align investment and policy priorities. We worked with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Auckland’s economic and cultural agency, on the masterplan. Unlike traditional economic or planning approaches, our approach linked the physical environment to the most impactful opportunities for industry and employment. In the latest edition of the Arup Journal, we discuss how a NZ$2.8bn investment can facilitate community impact and encourage new and high-value economic activity in New Zealand. We are excited to share our collaboration with Novaterra on Mauritius' Beau Plan Smart City (BPSC). This 230-hectare development will feature over 1,750 homes, a business district, and diverse amenities—all while preserving the region's natural beauty and history. Arup's contributions from our Mauritius office include civil, water, electrical, and transport engineering. We revitalised traditional irrigation, reduced flood risk with sustainable solutions, and preserved natural features in our transportation planning. Additionally, our integration of Digital Twin's IoT platform will enhance operational efficiency across electrical and water systems. BPSC is set to be a model of dynamic, sustainable urban living.
