Cyclone Alvaro's impact on Madagascar on January 1 and 2, 2024, with over 4,500 victims, underscores the critical need for high-quality meteorological data. It highlights the growing importance of #EarlyWarningsForAll, ensuring accessible data for countries to proactively monitor and address weather-related risks, a need made more pressing by the increasing frequency of such events due to climate change. This image, acquired by one of Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 1 January 2024, shows the cyclone in the Mozambique Channel. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eU6kahyj

We will update with the figures in a few weeks
Professor of Climate Science | Creator of Warming Stripes | MBE | National Centre for Atmospheric Science, University of Reading
2023 was the warmest year on record globally by a large margin. Another dark red stripe gets added, though I think I need a new colour. The official confirmation of exactly how warm 2023 was will come in the next couple of weeks. Some datasets will show that 2023 was more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
