We all have that manager we’ll never forget — for better or worse Our relationship with our manager has a bigger impact on our mental health and wellbeing than that of our therapists, and even as much as our partners But most managers get little or no training. They're accidental bosses promoted based on technical skill rather than their ability to lead people So we hit the streets of London and New York to hear your stories — the good ones, the bad ones, and everything in between

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the riots occurring across the UK 💛 Whether or not you are part of a directly targeted community or city, these events may still impact you. It’s natural to feel concern for yourself, family, loved ones, colleagues or community. Dr Ramesh Perera-Delcourt, our Head of Psychology, shares a few things you might find helpful for taking care of yourself or others: ✍ Acknowledge the situation and the emotions it stirs up. You could write down or even just name what you’re feeling. This can help you understand the feeling, let it be there, then pass. 📚 Make time for things that replenish you, such as reading, watching TV, savouring food, trying to stick to a sleep routine, or any kind of physical activity. 🤝 Connect with support systems. Human connection can be a powerful source of comfort and strength. Try to connect with those who support you and, if you feel able to do so, those who you can support, both inside and outside of work. 💛 Be kind to yourself and others. Speak to yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to someone you care about – with a warm tone of voice, recognising that you are doing your best and focussing on what’s right for you. 📵 Manage media consumption. You can set time limits on how much you check the news and social media. Unfollow or mute what distresses you and focus on accounts or news stories that uplift you or make you feel hopeful. 👉 Ensure physical safety. Be aware of any risks of violence in your local area and avoid these spots if possible. Your physical safety is paramount, and taking precautions can help you feel more secure. ✨ Support charities combatting racism or supporting asylum seekers and refugees, such as: ✨ HOPE not hateExit Hate TrustStop Hate UKBritish Red CrossMigrant VoiceRefugee Action We've made a selection of short Unmind resources free to access that might help you at this time. Managers are powerful… but they're not superheroes. They can't be expected to be the sole arbiters of workplace wellbeing. Instead, a whole-organization approach is needed to drive sustainable high performance. But how do you actually go about achieving that? Join our exclusive webinar series to equip yourself with insights to help you recognize the gaps in your current manager training programs. Then we’ll look at how to turn those findings into actions that drive real change across your whole workplace. (And if you can't make it on the day, don’t worry. We'll send you the recording.)

There are some naturally brilliant bosses out there. But for most, it takes training - which they too often don’t receive. Our recent survey showed that 66% of employees would feel much more supported at work if their manager had learnt sufficient mental health skills. Without these skills, individuals can burn out and organizations can lose out on the talent that matters. But we’re here to help people leaders support themselves and their teams’ wellbeing. And subsequently build more resilient, thriving organizations. Find out how in our free handbook below. 📔

People don’t stay with good companies, they stay with good bosses. And today, we celebrate them. The ones who support their team’s wellbeing. The ones with the skills to shape a positive workplace culture. The ones who make Monday a day to actually look forward to, not dread. But not everyone is lucky enough to get the good boss. Because 82% aren’t taught what ‘good’ looks like. But great leadership is learnable. And we’re empowering leaders with the mental health skills they need to help their teams thrive.
