In #Austria’s alpine state of #Tyrol, a town of less than 5000 people has become the lynchpin of efforts to maintain supply security of #penicillin for the continent. “#Kundl is the largest and only major, fully integrated penicillin production network in Europe,” says Peter Stenico, Sandoz's country president for Austria. “We are basically the only remaining one.” Danielle Myles looks into the Swiss group's €200m upgrade of its penicillin plant which has become a bastion of European production of the life-saving drug. https://lnkd.in/db9t_Nwr #FDI #antibiotics #Europe #reshoring #offshoring #pharma #pharmashortages #foreigndirectinvestment

The Greek islands have firmly established themselves as an iconic summer holiday hotspot — and many lucky European holidaymakers are enjoying them right now. 🌴 Companies have also been flocking to the islands, to take advantage of the Gr-eco Islands Initiative, which encourages them to establish sustainable, circular economies supported by public sector funding. 🌴 “We are using the power of the islands’ brand name to attract important brand names and money, to give huge publicity to the possibility of sustainable islands,” says #Greece’s minister of environment and energy, Theodoros Skylakakis. The likes of Volkswagen, Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and Vodafone have all signed up. But will their programmes create lasting change? With thanks to Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, Maik Stephan, Gianni Chianetta, Greening the Islands Foundation and Ayvens for sharing their insights. #FDI #foreigndirectinvestment #Greekislands #PPP #publicprivatepartnerships #Grecoislands #Poros #Chalki #Halki #Astypalea #circulareconomy #sustainability #ecotourism #sustainabletourism

In La Rochelle, chemicals giant Solvay is pursuing a comeback investment in rare earth processing to reshore an industry that’s been lost to China. The Belgian firm is transforming its 76 year-old facility along #France’s Atlantic coast into a major European hub for the permanent magnets that power green technologies. "This is the only plant outside #China that is able or has the potential to separate all rare earth materials,” says Solvay’s CEO, Philippe Kehren. Danielle Myles looks into the group's bid to put Europe on the map for rare earth elements needed for #EV and wind turbine motors. Thanks to Philippe, Guillaume Gau, Edoardo Righetti and #LaRochelle mayor Jean-François Fountaine for sharing their insights. https://lnkd.in/gmGs5pGp #FDI #reshoring #industrialisation #LaRochelle #EV #windturbines #rareearths #magnets #permanentmagnets #supplychains #valuechains

Friday marked the one-year anniversary of Joe Biden's landmark executive order on outbound investment screening. The final countdown has begun to unveiling the finalised regime, which is expected before the US election in November. Investors still flag problems with draft rules, and attention is turning to what the next president would do with the world's first outbound investment screening mechanism. Thanks to Mario Mancuso, P.C., Harry G. State-owned investors are continually refining their approach to governance, transparency, and sustainability. But this #oped dissecting the results of Global SWF's latest GSR Scorecard reveals that the #SWF and public pension fund industries as a whole still have a long way to go. "On adherence to reputable environmental, societal and governance frameworks, and commitment to net zero targets ... only 65 of the 200 assessed funds had committed to such goals as of June 2024," writes Diego López. 💬 Have Your Say: How do you think state-owned investors can further enhance their practices? Strategic producers are moving back home to #Europe to be closer to end markets. Mega-projects with a strong #reshoring angle have promised to spark new investment and create thousands of #jobs. But will they be enough to stop the #deindustrialisation occurring across the region? In our latest cover story, Jacopo Dettoni, Alex Irwin-Hunt and Danielle Myles delve into some of the region's most important industrial projects — from STMicroelectronics in #Sicily and Solvay in #LaRochelle to Agratas in #Somerset and Sandoz in #Kundl — to examine whether they can revive local value chains and economies. #FDI #foreigndirectinvestment #industrialdecline #valuechains #supplychains #megaprojects #strategicindustries #criticalassets #criticalindustries https://lnkd.in/gkg7_WpS

The latest issue of fDi Intelligence magazine is out 💥 In the cover story, our team unravelled some of Europe’s most important reshoring projects — can they help reverse the region’s deindustrialisation? Meanwhile Alex Irwin-Hunt dived into #Madrid’s coming-of-age tech ecosystem, and Linnea Ahlgren and Ioanna Lykiardopoulou assessed the EU’s attempt to grow its semiconductor industry. Still on the continent, Danielle Myles looked at why sustainability investors are flocking to the Greek Islands (spoiler: the good PR helps) while back in London Jacopo Dettoni identifies the new UK government’s top #FDI priorities. Across the Atlantic, we have interviews with the governors of #Massachusetts and North Carolina, while John Egan investigated who actually owns the US farmland causing local lawmakers so much angst. Down in #Mexico, Samuel M. looked at the country’s reputation as a backdoor for getting Chinese goods into the US, and in Africa LUCINDA IMA JACKSON-OBOT examined #Nigeria’s abrupt expropriation of a luxury beachfront. Hassan Jivraj continued our ‘Uncharted’ series on frontier FDI markets by looking into #Uzbekistan, while Ben Payton critiqued Singapore’s bid to grow from financial hub to start-up hub. And don’t miss our data deep dives on the world’s best FDI performers in respect to the size of their economies, plus the world’s top 10 container ports. Thanks to our insightful columnists – Julien Chaisse, Didi Caldwell, Dr. Martin G. Kaspar, Charlie Robertson, Lawrence Yeo and Eli David Rokah, plus guest columnists Michael Castle-Miller and Diego López. And as always, to our production team of Elliot Smither, Andrew Petrie, Nicholas Bunce, Paramjit Virdee, Zhenqing Du and Ola Moore. Read it all here 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/g--_-vMi

The west is shaping a narrative of #deglobalisation where the hope of free trade has given way to a lingering pessimism about its prospects, write Dr. Martin G. Kaspar and Tom Becker. 🗨 But this sentiment is not shared across the globe. "Asian countries ... are still liberalising, and seeking to remain a global destination for greenfield #FDI," they write in their #oped here 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/gUxqGyGK 💬 Do you agree that "the debate surrounding #globalisation is driven by more western-centric rhetoric and perception"?
