Volunteers in the Hunger Prevention Center receive donations, replenish shelves, pack food bags, and distribute groceries. We may currently accommodate groups of up to 6 people in the Hunger Prevention Center.
Volunteers in the Thrift Store process donations, stock shelves, display items, and perform sales floor duties interacting with customers.
Thrift Store Donation Center volunteers sort through donations and prepare them for sale in the Thrift Store. We may currently accommodate groups of up to 5 people in our Thrift Donation Center.
Prince William Food Rescue (PWFR) PWFR is an app-based program enabling volunteers to pick up food and deliver it to people and programs in need. PWFR is busier than ever delivering food to ACTS and SERVE homebound clients. Food pickups/Home food deliveries are no contact and follow social distancing guidelines.
Additionally PWFR and the Community Feeding Taskforce have a need for volunteers ages 18-55 to help in their food warehouse during COVID-19. The warehouse is located at 8418 Kao Circle, Manassas 20112. Shifts are Monday-Friday, 8am-12Noon and Friday, 12Noon-4pm. Volunteers should be prepared to lift up to 40 pounds.

Throughout Prince William County, volunteers for Domestic Violence Services are taking calls and assisting victims in finding safe shelter. Sexual Assault Services volunteers take calls, as well, directing victims, reporting options, and encouraging medical care. Volunteers for both Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services accompany victims in hospitals and in courtrooms, advocating for them and giving them support.

Get Involved
ACTS is truly unique when it comes to the variety of roles volunteers play within the organization. On any given day at ACTS, you will see volunteers in the Hunger Prevention Center receive donations, stock and replenish shelves, pack food bags, and distribute groceries. A visit to the Admin building finds Finance Department volunteers inputting data and scanning documents. Behind closed doors amid the muffled whoosh of sound machines are volunteers trained to answer crisis phone calls for ACTS’ 24-hour helpline. Across the parking lot, volunteers in the ACTS Family Services building assist in facilitating support groups for children and adults touched by domestic violence and sexual assault.

There is an ongoing need for Volunteers in these areas:
Adopt-A-Day Program– Volunteers provide premade breakfast, lunch or dinner and after-school snacks for children staying at the Beverly Warren Shelter.

- The meals can be dropped out at our facility and our staff will serve it. Or if you choose, you can bring and serve the meals for our clients.
- Capacity: Out shelter has a 18 bed capacity. However, we will give you a courtesy call to let you know how many clients we have on your specific week.
- Time: Dinner is served at 6:15 pm, so we always tell our donors that they can arrive around 5:50 pm if they are going to serve it. If its just to drop off, it can be before that time.
- You can provide:
- Dinner: this is the main donation. It can be home style cooked meals or store bought meals.
- Lunch: Optional. If you want to donate lunch it can be things like prepared sandwiches or the ingredients for the sandwiches. Microwave Mac & Cheese or Chef Boyardee
- Breakfast: Optional. If you decide to bring breakfast it should be food that can be heated in the microwave (waffles, french toast, sausages) or that don't need to be cooked (milk, cereal).

Administration– Volunteers assist our offices with general administrative tasks.

We have oppertunities for volunteer work in our Administration.
Duties:
Under the supervision of the Administrative Coordinator or Volunteer Coordinator, volunteers may be asked to assist with: mailings, data entry, filing, answering phones, and special events (iWalk, Operation Turkey).
Qualifications:
Prior administrative and computer experience is preferred but not required.
Minimum age: 18
Domestic Violence Services– Volunteers are provided training to assist with answering LAP calls. LAP is our Lethality Assessment Protocol program.
Domestic Violence Services
Volunteer opportunities abound at ACTS Domestic Violence Services.
In accordance with domestic violence program state accreditation standards, volunteers who work directly with clients must complete an intake with the ACTS Domestic Violence Services Director or Community Educator in addition to 32 hours of accredited domestic violence training. This training is provided by ACTS free of charge except for a one-time $50 fee to cover the cost of training materials.
Volunteers may be trained and mentored to assist with or provide many services that staff members perform. Here are some examples:
- Facilitation of Adult Victim Groups, both English and Spanish;
- Facilitation of Children's Groups;
- Assistance with Court Advocacy and Accompaniment;
- Office Administration;

Food Pantry– Volunteers sort and package items for families or pick up donations from local grocers.

Keep in mind the food pantry requires some heavy lifting, bending and standing for long periods of time. We need three types of volunteers:
- Those who stock/replenish
- Pick-up drivers, and
- Volunteers who work the floor and give out groceries.

Helpline- Volunteers are provided training to answer calls for our 24/7 helplines.

If you answered “yes” to these questions, ACTS Helpline needs volunteers like you. No experience is needed—only a caring heart, dedication and a willingness to listen and learn.

ACTS Sexual Assault Services is currently in need of passionate, dedicated and compassionate volunteers to join our support team. In order to volunteer, it is mandatory to attend a 32 hour training that will equip you with the skills necessary to help sexual assault and sexual abuse victims and their families on their path of healing. We train individuals in crisis listening, dynamics of sexual assault and abuse and how to provide the best care for victims in their time of need.
Volunteers are trained and mentored to assist with the following duties:
- Providing on-call coverage for our 24-hour hotline
- Accompanying for forensic exams at the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center Emergency Department
- Facilitating support groups for sexual assault and /or sexual abuse victims.

Thrift Store Sorter - work in our warehouse to open our bags of donations.
Thrift Store Sorter
The responsibility of a donation sorter works in our warehouse to open our bags of donations, sort through our clothing items, and prepare them for our staff to price and hang. If items are in unsaleable condition they are put in a
separate area to be discarded. Rather than throw these items away, they are sold in bulk to organizations who distribute them in Africa. Also, if shoes or other items are found in the bags they are put into bins to be sent to our Thrift Store location for pricing. This is the ideal job for individuals who enjoy clothes and can make a good story to go with what you find. If you see cute children's clothes in the store and say out loud, "Isn't that adorable?" then this is the job for you. Why not sign up a group of friends? We have a lot of fun!

The thrift store retail assistant processes, sorts and stocks donations to the thrift store and performs sale floor duties as assigned.
They must possess excellent customer service skills and be able to undertake the physical requirements involved with the Thrift Store setting. Good oral commutation skills and language skills are an advantage. Duties also include maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the store. If you like meeting people, showing off what you have to share, and take pride in what you do, this could be the spot for you.
You will meet some wonderful people. Some may come in, grab what they want, and go. But that isn't the norm. Most of our customers are part of the ACTS family and come to the store to meet, chat, and look for that latest piece of something they can't live without!
