Last evening I watched Manchester by the Sea, but by the end of the movie, I was ready to take some zoloft and I think that the actors probably had to take some also during and after the production. The story is confusing in that it keeps going from present to past without notice. This take away any thought of what's going on when suddenly you're watching something that has nothing to do with what was going on at the time. The story centers around a man who is extremely depressed due to the fact that he blames himself for the loss of his three children killed in a fire that he probably caused due to his drinking and drugs. Then his brother dies, leaving him the guardian of his son, which the story moves back into the past, then the present and how this depressed, miserable man is going to do with the problem of being guardian to his nephew. The nephew is an enigma. His father dies and he goes along doing all the things he did before his father passed. He invites his girlfriends, his buddies over, orders pizza and frets about how he's going to have sex with his girlfriend. No where does he worry about the fact that his father is gone and his mother has left a long time ago due to a drinking problem and had to be put in a psych ward. Meantime, the uncle, the main character of this movie, is figuring out how he's going to get out of being the guardian of this boy. This goes on and on and on until finally, and depressingly, the movie comes to an end. I do not want to give the ending away but obviously it doesn't end on a high note. I would not recommend this movie to anyone and unless they really want to feel deeply sad, it would be best to avoid it. I will say that Casey Affleck did a good job at portraying this miserable character and Kyle Chandler was a blip in the movie. His character could have been played by any "dead" person, which was a shame. I gave it two points because of the acting but the movie itself was really a disappointment to me and I congratulate anyone who thought they enjoyed it.
