The best way to determine your eligibility for membership is to begin your application. It will guide you through the qualification process.

If you do not qualify for any of the basic membership categories, you may show your support for the field and join as a Psychology Supporter.

  • Member: Doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Associate: Master’s degree or two years of graduate study in psychology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • International Affiliate: Membership in the psychological association of their country or evidence of appropriate qualifications
  • Graduate Student Member: Enrollment in a graduate psychology program; includes membership in the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS)
  • Undergraduate Student Affiliate: Enrollment in undergraduate psychology courses; may join APAGS
  • High School Student Affiliate: Enrollment as a high school student; may join APAGS
  • Community College Teacher Affiliate: Teaching psychology at a 2-year institution
  • High School Teacher Affiliate: Teaching psychology at a secondary school
  • Psychology Supporter: Anyone who wants to show support for the field may join as a Psychology Supporter if you are not otherwise eligible for membership

APA membership is effective January 1 through December 31. If you join APA between August 1 and December 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

Dues for the first year range from $22–$100, based on membership level. Payment is due annually at renewal.

APA and APF are 501(c)(3) organizations, APA Services, Inc. is a 501(c)(6) organization. APA’s Federal ID# is 53-0205890; APF’s Federal ID# is 52-6051733; APA Services, Inc. Federal ID# is 52-2262136.

Payments to APA and APF may be deductible as charitable contributions (less the value of any goods or services received). The portion of dues payable to APA Services, Inc. and contributions to the Psychology Advocacy Fund are dues payments or contributions to a 501(c)(6) entity and are not deductible as a charitable contribution, however such dues payments may be otherwise deductible. You are receiving goods in return for your payment consisting of APA publications which are valued at $18 plus the value of your division journals. APA publication costs and other costs for APA journal subscriptions are not tax deductible. 12% of your total dues are estimated to be allocable to lobbying activities and therefore not deductible for income tax purposes. Please consult your tax advisor regarding tax deductibility of dues payments and contributions.

Please note: 60% of your membership dues payment will go to APA Services, Inc. and 40% to APA.
