(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 7-year-old boy has been shot and killed on the West Side.

On Tuesday, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that a child had been shot shortly after 3 p.m.

The shooting took place in the vicinity of West Jackson Boulevard and South Oakley Boulevard.

Officers that arrived on scene administered first aid.

“They immediately took the 7-year-old, put the 7-year-old in the back of their squad car and immediately drove them here to the hospital,” Snelling said.

“Unfortunately, even after applying life saving techniques, once the 7-year-old was brought into the hospital and seen, unfortunately, that 7-year-old was pronounced dead.”

Snelling said he does not believe that the boy was the target of the gun shots, however the investigation is ongoing.

The boy was reportedly on his way to visit a neighbor when he was struck in the chest.

The name of the child has not been released.

Police are currently canvassing the area and asking for any video footage of the incident.

An angry Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke outside Stroger Hospital.

“As a city, we have to continue to surround one another, protect one another and do everything in our power to build a society in which a child can grow up and go outside without the fear or the reality of being murdered.”
