We've been plagued with winds out of the west/northwest for the majority of the week, but that hasn't really been an issue. Of course, that just depends what bay system you're fishing.
Less than a month is left for those of you who are entered in the CCA STAR tournament. There have been some changes on the leaderboard. Here’s the most updated version since Aug. 4.
Jessica Riemer, Jennifer Deutrich, Kim Imhoff and Jennifer Gilleland had a banner day offshore fishing with Capt. Taylor Borel of Wave Dancer Charters. These four ladies went to work on the red snapper and returned to the dock at the Galveston Yacht Marina with some solid fish.
Capt. Reanna Delacruz of Baffin Bay Adventures said, "It's been a great week, so far, with low winds and high pressure, and coming into a new moon phase brought some great opportunities for catching big speckled trout."
If you like near-calm conditions and hot temperatures, then you like this weather.
This past Friday and Saturday, I had the extreme pleasure of fishing with Valerie Townsend and her 16-year-old grandson Garrett Mallery of San Antonio.
The past couple of the days, the Gulf of Mexico has been flat. This was good news for those trying to get in the last few weeks of snapper season.
Capt. Derrick Greene said, "It's been a roller coaster ride lately, up and down, especially dealing with all the bad weather, freshwater, and now the heat." Despite this, Greene has been putting together some nice catches both inshore and offshore.
Capt. Mike Cacciotti said, "Fishing has been great in west Galveston Bay using live croakers over shell reefs."
Since there's only a month left in this tournament, I figured I'll give an update of the leaderboard as of Sunday.
I don't like to keep harping on the tropics, but this little pesky system heading towards Florida can't seem to make up its mind.
Capt. Mike Segall of Reel Threel Charters went searching for better water conditions and ended up in west Galveston Bay. Using live shrimp, his two anglers ended up catching a mixed box of fish.
There were lots of good fish caught from the middle of Galveston Bay over the weekend. When I say middle, I mean the area of the bay outside Eagle Point. Most anglers fished the gas wells just across from Redfish Island.
West Galveston Bay produced good catches of speckled trout over the weekend for those anglers who didn't mind the conditions. Fish were taken from various locations in the upper portion of the bay, mostly on live natural baits, like shrimp and croaker.
Capt. Erik Renteria has been out dodging the storms the past couple of days, and has been putting together some nice boxes of fish.
Capt. Mark Talasek reported tough fishing for those anglers not willing to wade, while Capt. Bink Grimes reported finding good trout catches between storms.
Capt. Tag Anderson out of Oak Island on the east side of Trinity Bay reported good fishing on the ship channel, concentrating on fishing structure.
The West End Anglers' West Bay Slam Tournament and Fundraiser, benefiting the Texana Children's Center for Autism, is Saturday out of West End Marina and Restaurants
I find it interesting what a charter captain's perspective is about the overall red snapper fishery. Here are a couple reports — one from the offshore waters out of Freeport, the other from Galveston with Capt. Greg Ball's overall observation on the snapper fishery.
Shane Rilat of the North Jetty Bait Camp reported anglers fishing the rocks are catching plenty of redfish and croakers. Other fish are being caught, and these include sand trout, sheepshead, black drum, speckled trout, stingrays, sharks, even a few pompano and the occasional jack crevalle.
