Best Overall: Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo
Crown Affair takes the top spot because it revitalizes hair with gentle ingredients and leaves a lovely fresh scent. The talc-free formula uses a combination of tapioca starch and Japanese persimmon powder to gently absorb oil and leave your hair looking oh so fresh. It also comes with a handy brush that makes it easy and mess-free to apply. It’s the go-to powder dry shampoo of Glamour senior West Coast editor Jessica Radloff, who says, “I’ll never go back to an aerosol dry shampoo again because nothing is as good as Crown Affair's dry shampoo in powder form. The kabuki brush helps me evenly apply the powder, and not only does my hair feel so much cleaner after, but my at-home blowout lasts at least three additional days.” We love that it now comes with a refillable component as well.
Key ingredients: Tapioca starch, persimmon powder | Size: 0.53 oz. | Scent: Lemongrass, bergamot, yuzu
- What we love: Comes with applicator brush
- What could improve: Slightly smaller in size than other brands

Best for Oily Hair: Handmade Heroes Dry Shampoo Volume Powder
This powder dry shampoo from Handmade Heroes is made from 100% natural ingredients: Rice powder, kaolin clay, and charcoal work together to lift excess oil from your roots. “This is one of my personal favorites and I always carry it with me either in my tote or gym bag to have on hand anytime I need a quick hair pick-me-up,” says Glamour contributor Clare Holden. “I love how it doesn’t leave any white residue on my brown hair (it comes in two options, one for dark and the other for light/blonde hair) or make my sensitive scalp itchy.” It’s pretty affordable, coming in at $10, and a little bit goes a long way, so it’s definitely worth the value.
Key ingredients: Kaolin clay, rice powder, cacao | Size: 1.8 oz. | Scent: Eucalyptus
- What we love: Sensitive-scalp friendly
- What we don’t like: A little difficult to get the product out
- 3/15
Best for Dark Hair: Billie Floof Dry Shampoo Volumizing Powder
The dark-hair option of this powder dry shampoo from Billie came highly recommended by all the brunettes on the Glamour team. It dissolves into roots and invisibly soaks up oil and grease without leaving any particles. “I love the price point on this dry shampoo, plus the fact that it comes in two shades, including one better suited for my dark hair,” says Glamour beauty contributor Brigitte Earley. “It's nice and lightweight and brushes right into hair.” She also uses it overnight when she doesn’t have time to wash and dry her hair: “I apply it to my roots before going to bed. By the time I wake up, it's fully absorbed and my hair looks fresh and alive again.”
Key ingredients: Biotin, rice starch | Size: 1.2 oz. | Scent: Amber
- What we love: Two options available for both light and dark hair
- What we don’t like: Packaging is cool but a little tricky to hold.
- 4/15
Best for Fine Hair: SexyHair Big Powder Play Volumizing and Texturizing Powder
For those with fine hair, this powder dry shampoo from SexyHair is the one to reach for. It'll buy you an extra day or two in between washes, and it'll give you some much-needed volume by slightly lifting hair from your roots. Celeb hairstylist Graham Nation, who has worked with everyone from Demi Moore to Simone Ashely, told us this is his pick whenever he needs to add texture to hair without having to do a full blowout. “This powder dry shampoo is perfect for fine hair types and provides a safer option for those who don’t want aerosols in their house and hair,” he says.
Key ingredients: Silica silylate, propylene glycol | Size: 0.4 oz. | Scent: Fragrance-free
- What we love: Transparent-free finish
- What we don’t like: To give volume, the texture may feel slightly tacky.
- 5/15
Best for Volume: Hairstory Powder
In addition to giving your hair a refresh, dry shampoo is also a great way to add some extra volume. Whether you’re wearing your hair down, braiding it, or going for an updo, this powder dry shampoo option from Hairstory is a favorite with several of the hairstylists we spoke to. Amber Casciano Shatzen, an Atlanta-based hairstylist, calls it hands down the best powder dry shampoo she’s ever used. “It’s versatile, caters to all hair colors, textures, lengths, and styles, and delivers exceptional results,” she says. “The generously sized bottle and convenient pump make application effortless, but what truly sets it apart is the way it effortlessly builds texture throughout the hair while effectively absorbing oils from the scalp. I’ve found the quality of its ingredients to be top-notch, and it’s a staple product used daily in my salon.”
Key ingredients: Kaolin, cornstarch, tapioca starch | Size: 1.35 oz. | Scent: Fragrance-free
- What we love: Adds hold for an updo and texture to braids
- What we don’t like: Dispenser isn’t so easy when applying at the back of the hair.

Best Talc-Free: Dae Fairy Duster Dry Shampoo
A favorite of both the Glamour beauty team and among hair professionals, this powder dry shampoo works overtime to not only absorb grease but also to deliver shine and softness to the hair with prickly pear seed oil. It also helps to prevent further damage with moringa leaf extract while improving the strength of strands with the addition of cactus flower extract. Hairstylist Raven Hurtado calls it her top choice: “I recommend the Dae Fairy Duster volumizing powder dry shampoo because it absorbs oil, adds volume and body, and has a delicious citrus scent.”
Key ingredients: Mojave yucca, cornstarch | Size: 1.06 oz. | Scent: Citrus
- What we love: Easy-to-use pump
- What we don’t like: Might not work as well on very fine hair
- 7/15
Best for Curly Hair: Klorane Dry Shampoo Powder with Oat Milk
Infused with oat milk, this calming option from Klorane comes in recyclable packaging and is both sulfate- and paraben-free. It’s suitable for all hair types but works especially well with curly hair due to its conditioning ingredients. Hairstylist Elisha Smith recommends always using a brush as opposed to your hands to blend it out. “Remember, dry shampoo is best used with friction from your brush where the powder attaches to the oil, and the brush removes the oil attached to the starch from the hair,” she says.
Key ingredients: Oat milk | Size: 1.7 oz. | Scent: Lightly fragranced
- What we love: Doesn’t leave any residue
- What we don’t like: Need to be careful not to dispense too much product
- 8/15
Best for Scalp: Briogeo Scalp Revival Dry Shampoo Powder
This one is for anyone looking for a long-term solution to an irritated scalp or oily roots with dry ends. This dry shampoo powder from Briogeo has nutrient-rich formula that detoxifies and helps with oil production. Hairstylist Becca Raziuddin loves this product for its ability to gently clean the top of the hair, saying, “This is a great product for oily hair because it’s made with charcoal, which is great for oil absorption.”
Key ingredients: Biotin, rice starch | Size: 1.7 oz. | Scent: Light
- What we love: Soothes scalp
- What we don’t like: Harder to dispense product as it gets emptier
- 9/15
Best for Blonde Hair: Primally Pure Natural Dry Shampoo Light Locks
Keep your latest set of blonde highlights golden for longer by reducing the frequency you need to wash your hair. Kaolin clay and arrowroot powder work together to absorb any excess oil and buy you time between blowouts. A tiny amount of cocoa powder gives this powder an off-white tone that blends in seamlessly with every shade of blonde from sandy and ash to platinum. This was another recommendation from Raziuddin, who says it’s a great dry shampoo option for blondes but also comes in a tinted version for dark hair.
Key ingredients: Arrowroot powder | Size: 1 oz., 2 oz. | Scent: Lightly lavender
- What we love: Comes in two sizes; also available for dark hair
- What we don’t like: Not as widely available
- 10/15
Best Splurge: Oribe Serene Scalp Dry Shampoo Powder
While this pick from Oribe is slightly more expensive, it lasts for ages. The dreamy scent and the way it leaves hair looking clean in minutes is worth every penny. Stylist Raven Hurtado says it’s her go-to because it absorbs oil and dirt and extends the time between washes. It’s convenient for those mornings when you're running late.
Key ingredients: Rosebay extract | Size: 1.6 oz. | Scent: Floral/fruity
- What we love: Suitable for all hair types
- What we don’t like: Slightly harder to apply
- 11/15
Best for Colored Hair: K18 Air Wash Dry Shampoo
While this technically isn’t a powder dry shampoo, it’s a great option for colored hair. “I love how invisible the translucent microbeads are on my dyed brown hair,” says Holden. “Even though it’s a spray, it doesn’t come in an aerosol and is my favorite option for in between washes.” If you’re trying to cut down on how much you heat-style your hair and can’t seem to find a dry shampoo that works for you, this option from K18 is surprisingly lightweight and works incredibly well at eliminating odors and grease without resulting in buildup on the scalp.
Key ingredients: Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid | Size: 5 oz. | Scent: Fresh
- What we love: Lightweight feel
- What we don’t like: More of a liquid than a powder
- 12/15
Is powder dry shampoo better than aerosol dry shampoo?
Ultimately, choosing between an aerosol dry shampoo and powder dry shampoo comes down to your preference. Some people find that powder dry shampoos are less irritating because they tend to have fewer chemical ingredients than aerosols. Others might have sensitivities to the ingredients in powder dry shampoos, says Anna Chacon, MD, a board-certified dermatologists. If you’re looking for a product that is a bit more gentle on the scalp, a powder dry shampoo is ideal, says celebrity hairstylist Jackie Seabrooke. As always, if you’re concerned, patch test the product on a small area on your skin before applying to your scalp.

Are powder dry shampoos safer?
Although the rise in popularity of powder dry shampoos has a lot to do with people trying to avoid unnecessary aerosol use for health and environmental concerns, you can rest assured that the risks are minimal. While aerosols may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be harmful when inhaled, powder dry shampoos may contain talc, which has been linked to respiratory issues if inhaled. But the overall risk from either product is considered to be low when used as directed, says Dr. Chacon. As long as you’re using the products as directed and paying attention to ingredients and your skin’s reaction, powder dry shampoos are safe to use.

How often is it okay to use dry shampoo?
Dry shampoo can be a godsend when you’re short on time and need an instant hair revive, but all of the stylists we spoke to were adamant not to overuse it. “I recommend no more than two days in a row for dry shampoo use,” says Seabrooke. “If used too many times consecutively, it can lead to problems such as an itchy, dandruff scalp and potential hair loss due to drying out the hair follicle.” Washing your hair every two to three days is important for scalp health and hair growth. It removes the buildup of shedding skin cells as well as other sweat and environmental pollutants that can clog hair follicles and contribute to hair breakage, and if there is no stimulation on the scalp for a prolonged period, it affects blood flow which supports healthy hair, says trichologist Helena Gibson.

Is baby powder better than dry shampoo?
While we love a beauty hack, we got a resounding no from every hairstylist we asked about this. While baby powder does work to absorb moisture, it really isn’t beneficial to either your hair or skin to use as a dry shampoo. “If you have scalp issues such as psoriasis and eczema, baby powder is not recommended,” says Seabrooke. Dr. Chacon points out that the ingredients in baby powder, such as talc or cornstarch, can potentially irritate the scalp and exacerbate these conditions. “Baby powder does not have the same oil-absorbing properties as dry shampoo, so it may not be as effective,” she says. And if you have a scalp condition, you should consult a dermatologist to find suitable hair-care products.
