3.5

Shy is a short novel, more of a novella about a fifteen-year-old teen, Shy, who's angry, misbehaves, causes havoc at school and the community and who eventually ends up in a "last chance school".

There are some stand-out moments and the writing is raw and intense. There's quite a bit of sex and sex talk and dick mentions - which is disconcerting for such a young person; it could explain why I was less sympathetic to Shy's issues, even though I'm aware kids are sexual creatures etc.

I don't know if I missed it, but I never quite got what his issue was, was there even a real issue?

Candi Thanks for putting this book on my radar, Bianca! I'll have to think about this one a bit... :)

Bianca Candi, have you read his Lanny or Grief is the Thing Feathers? He's definitely worth checking, his got his own writing style.

No, I haven't read either of those novels. After reading your review, I went to the author page and then realized he had written those as well. I'll definitely give him a try one day - I'm too curious not to! :)

No, I haven't read either of those novels. After readi..."

I loved The Grief ... I highly recommend the audiobook.

Laysee Shy seems like a confused mixed-up kid and not at all shy. Interesting name.

Antoinette Terrific review, Bianca! I’ve always meant to read Grief is the Thing with Feathers. Probably should start with that one.

Mark Porton Excellent review Bianca - was 'Shy' the Narrator, the reason I ask is I didn't like a book not so long ago where the young kid was the first person narrator - and it didn't really wash with me - Demon Copperhead

Margaret M - (too far behind to catch up although trying to spend more time on GR) Excellent review Bianca

Debbie Great review, Bianca! Loved Grief…, so have been curious about this one. I’ll skip it; doesn’t sound like my cuppa!

Karen Great review Bianca!

sweetnuthin Nice review. I felt that his issue was depression, as well as behavioural problems and a general dissatisfaction with the world.
