Akbar Ahmed, the Pakistani high commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland and the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, is thrilled about Todd Green’s “generous and brilliantly insightful” review of his book Journey into Europe:
In it, Green, a longtime propagator of the “Islamophobia” myth and open foe of the freedom of speech, says that Ahmed calls for a “pluralist identity” in Europe and “uses the Spanish term la convivencia to capture this strand of European identity and lifts up Jewish, Muslim, and Christian co-existence and cooperation in historic Andalusia as an example of this pluralist model.” He praises Journey into Europe because “it does not censor perspectives on Muslims that might give the reader pause concerning the realization of a New Andalusia,” but this just turns out to be another spurious claim to Muslim victimhood, highlighting “the anger Europe’s Muslim youth sometimes feels toward the majority population, particularly in light of policies that contribute to their marginalization and alienation in countries like Britain.” Yes, of course, it’s all Britain’s fault, as it is always the fault of the Infidel.
A New Andalusia. In the old Andalusia, as I show in my forthcoming book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS, the Muslims ruled, and the place was hardly a paradise for non-Muslims. Even Maria Rosa Menocal, in her extended whitewash of Muslim Spain called The Ornament of the World, admits that the laws of dhimmitude were very much in force in the great Al-Andalus:
The dhimmi, as these covenanted peoples were called, were granted religious freedom, not forced to convert to Islam. They could continue to be Jews and Christians, and, as it turned out, they could share in much of Muslim social and economic life. In return for this freedom of religious conscience the Peoples of the Book (pagans had no such privilege) were required to pay a special tax — no Muslims paid taxes — and to observe a number of restrictive regulations: Christians and Jews were prohibited from attempting to proselytize Muslims, from building new places of worship, from displaying crosses or ringing bells. In sum, they were forbidden most public displays of their religious rituals.
So much for a “pluralistic identity.” Also, historian Kenneth Baxter Wolf observes that “much of this new legislation aimed at limiting those aspects of the Christian cult which seemed to compromise the dominant position of Islam.” After enumerating a list of laws much like Menocal’s, he adds: “Aside from such cultic restrictions most of the laws were simply designed to underscore the position of the dhimmis as second-class citizens.”
If Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived together peaceably and productively only with Christians and Jews relegated by law to second-class status, then al-Andalus has absolutely no reason to be lionized in our age, and it is revealing that Akbar Ahmed and Todd Green are lionizing it anyway. Whatever the Christians and Jews of al-Andalus accomplished, they were still dhimmis. They enjoyed whatever rights and privileges they had not out of any sense of the dignity of all people before God, or the equality of all before the law, but at the sufferance of their Muslim overlords.
Is that the New Andalusia that Akbar Ahmed and Todd Green want?
Note also that the book is published by the pro-Muslim Brotherhood, Qatar-funded Brookings Institution.
“Journey into Europe, by Akbar Ahmed,” a review by Todd Green, Reading Religion, February 26, 2018:
Writing any type of survey book on Islam in Europe is not a task for the faint of heart. Islam’s long-term presence in Europe, combined with its myriad expressions and trajectories across the continent in modern history, makes such a project a daunting one. Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, the Pakistani high commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland and the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, takes up this challenge and produces a masterpiece in Journey into Europe: Islam, Immigration, and Identity (Brookings Institution Press, 2018). The book is a magisterial examination of Islam’s place in Europe’s historical, cultural, and political landscape….
Journey into Europe is both descriptive and prescriptive. What Ahmed describes is a continent at a crossroads as it struggles to determine how, or whether, Islam factors into its own identity formation. Ahmed illuminates this struggle by arguing Europe is best characterized by three competing identities. The first is its primordial identity, a type of tribalism in which Europeans come to value their own unique culture and traditions. The second is its predator identity, an aggressive, exclusivist, and even militaristic form of expression that defines what it means to be European in narrow religious, ethnic, or racial terms. The third is its pluralist identity. This identity moves away from tribe and blood by drawing on the shared history of diverse peoples in Europe. Ahmed uses the Spanish term la convivencia to capture this strand of European identity and lifts up Jewish, Muslim, and Christian co-existence and cooperation in historic Andalusia as an example of this pluralist model….
One of the greatest strengths of Journey into Europe is that it does not censor perspectives on Muslims that might give the reader pause concerning the realization of a New Andalusia. In addition to presenting stories of Muslims collaborating and cooperating with the non-Muslim majority for the common good, Ahmed also tackles sensitive topics pertaining to Europe’s Muslims, including instances of anti-Semitism, cases of foreign fighters joining ISIS, and expressions of anger or resentment toward the majority population.
In one notable account, he describes how three researchers on his team, while parked outside a mosque in Bradford, England, as they were preparing to film a documentary, were verbally harassed by large numbers of British-Pakistani students coming out of a nearby school. At one point, some students pounded on the vehicle in an act of physical intimidation. The proximity of the researchers to the mosque was seen as an act of provocation, and the students responded accordingly. It was an ugly scene and a most unfortunate experience given the purpose of the research project.
Ahmed could have kept this story to himself since the incident was an exception to the overall hospitable welcome his team received from Muslims throughout Europe. He didn’t. He puts it out there as something readers must come to terms with in trying to make sense of the anger Europe’s Muslim youth sometimes feels toward the majority population, particularly in light of policies that contribute to their marginalization and alienation in countries like Britain….

Some never seem to get it. Others choose not to. Some get it at the top but pretend not to.
Reality: What do they think we already have now? A world full of all kinds of people. Europe has all types including LOTS of muslims. And… how is that plan working out? Is it some utopic paradise??? Then what makes them think it ever will be? Oh, wait, I forgot. It’s just because they haven’t told them yet to try to ‘live peacefully with their neighbors’! They just needed to be told to be tolerant and respectful. They just need someone to tell them to be ‘nice’. That’s all! After that, everything should work fine! Oh, wait. Nevermind. They did that already. So tell me again, oh wise experts, why is it not working? Where is the paradise utopia that they claim is possible? Not in reality land!
It is the same with those who advocate for world peace. Just… “Give peace a chance,” they say. Uh, yeah, we did that. We tried it many times. We gave it a chance. The problem is, others did not. And it takes all to agree for that to work, which will never happen.
This is all leading to the false paradise and ‘tolerant’ utopia, fake world ‘peace’, one world religion, government, and economy that is on the way.
Also, the reason why this stuff does not work is as follows. First let me say that there is nothing wrong with ‘peace.’ Peace is a good thing, no argument there. But just don’t bet anything stupid on there ever being true peace until Kingdom Come. I see this all the time with kids at school. People are born with a sin nature, and it shows up right away. But culture makes it worse. So you have kids who are mean, rude, disrespectful, bullies, you name it. But the schools come up with all these little ‘recitations’ for them about how they are going to be ‘good.’ They show movies and read stories about how to be ‘nice.’ They have large scale ‘kindness’ challenges. ‘Peace-builder’ programs, etc. etc. They watch. They recite. They read and talk about it. They may even win an award. But at the end of the day, they are still mean, sassy, selfish bullies. When they have the chance and no one is looking, they really let it all hang out, and it’s not pretty folks. But you don’t have to tell a nice person to be ‘nice’. This brings me to the gospel again. The only way we can be truly changed, and it can’t be an external program, it must be internal, is by God. If we come to Jesus we get the Holy Spirit who changes us from the inside out. WE are able to live peacefully because we have God’s peace in our hearts. But the world as a whole does not and thus cannot live in peace. The 1st arrival dealt with personal sin. The 2nd; with judging the sin of the world and establishing the kingdom and then, and only then, will there be true peace. The rest…. is just a bad joke!

Thank you for taking the time to write that.
At the end of the day I’m finding peace in the idea that God created the night and day. The Tao is the dark and the light….
It’s for us to figure it out. To apprehend that peace. And then to try to radiate it as best we can with a warrior’s spirit.
But it doesn’t hurt at all to walk for awhile with others, fools and saves both.
Thanks. Again.

Muslims feeling alienated in European countries!!
Why? What laws make them feel alienated?
They have such religious freedom in Europe as they can only dream about in their own countries. Plus opportunities for educational and economic advancement without any restrictions.
Why are Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jews not feeling alienated in Europe and the U.S.? They are all prospering and getting into top positions in both government and civil life in all those countries.
When Muslims are governed by the same set of laws as others are, how can laws lead to alienation of anyone?
In fact, it is non-Muslims in the 56 Muslim majority countries who rightly feel alienated because of the two sets of laws – one for Muslims and the other for non-Muslims. And you have the gall to accuse secular, inclusive, kind and empathetic society of exclusion and causing alienation?
With such ideas and attitudes, I see no hope for Muslims. Their brains seem to have been either corrupted or have eroded over the centuries.
Muslims, understand this: Europe and the U.S. are the best countries in the world for you to live. Just look at the countries you left to confirm this.
If you still feel alienated, there is a good way out. Pack your bags, leave preferably for Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Libya, Sudan or Mali, or Mauritania.
You are sure to feel included, educated, culturally enriched, economically prospering. Good luck!!

How does Akbar Ahmed regard “The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise”?
mortimer says
THE MYTH OF AN ANDALUSIAN PARADISE IS NOT SUPPORTED BY HISTORICAL FACTS. IT WAS AN ANDALUSIAN PURGATORY and CHAMBER OF EXTERMINATION INSTEAD.
Spain was a jihadist country par-excellence (mass public execution for blasphemy, pogroms of Jews, intolerant laws, expulsions of Christians …).
In 851, took place a mass execution of 48 Christian monks who refused to accept Mohammed or publicly announced their Christian faith.
In 1066, there took place the first big pogrom against Jews in Europe, more than 4 000 Jews – including children and women were killed in one day. In Islamic Spain the Jewish population had to wear clothes which clearly separated them from a Muslim population.
The Caliph Hisham I of Córdoba started in 792 an offensive Jihad against France, plundering Bordeaux and killing famous medieval hero Roland was stopped a few kilometres from Paris.
The Caliph Al-Hakam I after a revolt of native Christian population in Cordoba expelled more than 20 000 families out of their native home.
Thanks to Ibn Rushd, a famous master of Islamic law, who lived in Islamic Spain we know this was according to Islamic law completely legal.
“(Islamic) scholars agree that all polytheists should be fought. This is founded on [K. 8:39]: “Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion is entirely Allah’s.”
“All Muslims agree that the aim of warfare against the People of the Book, with the exception of those belonging to the Quraysh-tribe and Arab Christians, is twofold: either conversion to Islam, or payment of poll-tax (djizyah).”
“Damage inflicted upon the enemy may consist in damage to his property, injury to his person or violation of his personal liberty, i.e., that he is made a slave and is appropriated. This may be done, according to the Consensus (idjma) to all polytheists: men, women, young and old, important and unimportant.”
Maimonides who lived in Islamic Spain (also in Morocco and Egypt) wrote about life in Spain with Muslims:
“Never did a nation molest, degrade, debase and hate us as much as they did, although we were dishonored by them beyond human endurance, and had to put up with their fabrications. Similarly our sages instructed us to bear the prevarications and preposterousness of Ishmael in silence. We have acquiesced, both old and young, to inure ourselves to humiliation. All this notwithstanding, we do not escape this continued maltreatment which well nigh curses us. No matter how much we suffer and elect to remain at peace with them, they stir up strife and sedition.”
Darío Fernández-Morera, an Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and of Comparative Literature at Northwestern University has written about myth of tolerant Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain).
“By any objective standards, then, and in spite of its undeniable artistic, literary, and scientific accomplishments, and of modern wishful “let-us-all-get-along” thinking that tries to gloss over evidence to the contrary, Islamic Spain was not a model of multicultural harmony. Andalusia was beset by religious, political, and racial conflicts controlled in the best of times only by the application of tyrannical force. Its achievements are inseparable from its turmoil.”

This time around, an attempt to establish a “New Andalusia” will be stopped by the “New Civil Wars”.
Europe is already unable to stop immigrant common crime and has given up trying, instead concentrating on “islamophobia”; which will also soon overwhelm police apparatus as the Islam-based attrocities expand.
I’m reasoning that Germany will be the first population to break with its own governing elite, followed by France. Sweden should have been the first but appears to be so engrossed, like ancient Rome, in personal hedonism that it won’t see the loss of freedom coming. The Netherland’s Amsterdam is in a similar state.

Another thing that makes American great is that your patriots can choose, if they wish, to guard the border, be armed as they do so, and not be instantly arrested for it.
Guy Forester says
Dear LRC,
I wish that what you have said is true, but I can assure you that those that have tried to maintain a border watch, armed or not, have not fared well. Direct opposition and threats of prosecution under the GWB and BHO administration have left the borders open until DJT restarted ICE.
I have followed this closely for years. When unarmed patriots went to the San Diego border years ago, all they did was shine lights on the border area. They were opposed by the usual culprits and eventually forced out by those that were supposed to guard the area.
All of the websites I followed that covered this over the years (at least 3 that I can think of) are now defunct.
Homeowners that have tried to hold illegal aliens for arrest have themselves been arrested. Some of them have also suffered worse retribution by the coyotes and cartel soldiers (real soldiers in gear and military vehicles as well). The robberies, burglaries, and murders of US citizens along the border do not get investigated or follow up in many areas.
I used to listen to at least 6 different radio broadcasters that specifically covered the open borders problem. 2 were fired, never to be heard from again. 3 died from natural causes (not replaced by anyone), and one radio station that carried 2 of them was sold to become a sports only channel. Only one person on the radio in SoCal now dares to bring this up, even on a periodic basis.
DJT has improved the situation, but believe me, there is a lot of open border and plenty get across every day. But just like the tree falling in a forest, if no one sees them come across, did it really happen?

Invite them to [accept] Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. … If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Number 4294.)
This was how Islam came to Europe. The ultimate method of spreading Islam in the beginning was war and it still is. This fact disqualifies for ever Islam’s “journey into Europe” and contaminates every expression of Islam in this continent. Islam has no legitimate place in Europe not even as a reformed and moderate religion. The ugly smell of power and violence can never be washed away from this repulsive invention of a demon possessed prophet.
Contrast Islam’s introduction in Europe with the apostle Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia (Acts 16:6-10) and make up your mind about which way of spreading a religion is divine and gracious and therefore which religion to reject: Islam or Christianity with its root in Judaism and the revelations of OT?

“Arabs …. are, by their savage nature, people of pillage and corruption. They pillage everything that they can take without fighting or taking risks, then flee to their refuge in the wilderness…
…and do not stand and do battle unless in self-defense. So when they encounter any difficulty or obstacle, they leave it alone and look for easier prey.
