“His father David said in a tweet that his son ‘would not wish his death to be used as the pretext for more draconian sentences or for detaining people unnecessarily.'”
Of course. Heaven forbid that we learn anything from experience.
“London Bridge terrorist stabbed Cambridge graduate, 25, to death in rampage at prisoner rehabilitation conference that paired jailed killers with students and held creative writing workshops,” by Jack Newman and Danyal Hussain, Mailonline, November 30, 2019:
One of the victims of yesterday’s London Bridge terror attack has been named by his father.
Jack Merritt, 25, from Cottenham, was the course co-ordinator for Learning Together, the education scheme run by the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology that killer Usman Khan had been yesterday afternoon.
The group had been running a conference at Fishmonger’s Hall where the attack started, with Khan one of the former criminals attending the rehabilitation seminar for prisoners.
His father David said in a tweet that his son ‘would not wish his death to be used as the pretext for more draconian sentences or for detaining people unnecessarily’….
Alarmed Pig Farmer says
There’s a kind of rhythm to the Jihad murder/post-murder cycle. We got the beat. The drum set relies of a steady bass pounding away that Moslem misbehavior rises because they’re misunderstood, the victims of bigotry, religious hatred. Haters, that’s what we are. But we make good targets too, nice juicy ones.
Charles says
If the father is net concerned about the ideology behind the death of his son, then neither are we concerned about his son or his pointless grief. We have ourselves to look after.
Rob says
Father also intends to offer his daughter for rape…
Ned says
David Merritt politicised this. Boris Johnson was just saying what any responsible PM would do. What greater indication is there that rehabilitation of die hard terrorists doesn’t work, than one stabs you to death at the rehab programme conference. Young and old lefties are always going to have this misplaced, blind, idealistic underdog view.
Infidel says
Taking care of societal interests at large would be more important than honoring the wishes of the Merritts. But the UK doesn’t have a normal government. Nothing short of a full fledged civil war will end the tragedy that’s the United Kingdom
Savvy Kafir says
At this point, I’d say a violent insurrection and civil war should be Plan B for British patriots. Plan A should be bringing Anne Marie Waters’ For Britain party to power. It’s their last chance for restoring sanity via the ballot box.
Anyone who cares about the fate of the UK should become a member of that party and give it all the support they can — whether they’re a Brit themselves or not.
smoris says
David Merritt should be held responsible for the next stabbing of a non-Muslim by a Muslim in Britain. It’s only fair. In fact, even if the Muslim attacker is set free, Mr. Merritt should be sent up to do time. He’d be a nice ripe subject for conversion anyway. Seriously, when some virtue-signalling asshole like this makes this kind of statement, he should be held responsible for the next assault or murder by a Muslim. He’s condoning it. He should pay for it. Obviously the loss of the so means little. Maybe his own freedom would mean more. This is like the couple in Germany who accepted a medal for their devotion to diversity AFTER their daughter was savagely raped and murdered by one of their darling immigrants. This is mental illness. Criminal insanity.
Oh, and who knows, maybe as the knife went in, young Jack had a change of heart. Maybe he WOULD like some justice and a better immigration and Muslim policy. Too late to find out for sure, but I’d be willing to bet on it.
LB says
The son was a college grad whose thesis was, and I kid you not: “The over representation of black, asian and minority males age 18-21 in UK penitentiaries”. He fought against “institutional racism” to prevent imprisoning of “minorities”… As you say, he MIGHT have had second thoughts about his views as the knife was going in, but I doubt it. I think back to stories of Western European activist women getting raped by muslim migrants and are still of the same mindset. It’s brainwashing and cognitive dissonance in the extreme. revereridesagain says
If I believed in such a place I would hope there would be a special rung of Hell for people who willingly sacrifice those they claim to love to violent savages because they do not want to “offend” the beliefs which drive the savages to kill. Right next to the one for people who draw their faux sense of “spirituality” from enabling the savages through their “willing submission”.
Savvy Kafir says
Yeah — it’s pretty twisted. There is no spiritual advantage in turning the other cheek to the enemy. That’s just one of the many problems I have with Christianity. It might seem like an acceptable policy if you expect the world to come to an end in the very near future, as Jesus did. But it’s not very helpful if you want to save yourself, your people, & your society from violent savages.
smoris says
Yes – this kind of muddled thinking confuses good and evil or denies both. Memo to David Merritt: there IS good and there IS evil. People who stab and kill innocent people are EVIL. Those who condone it are also EVIL. You are EVIL. There is no way to bring about good if we tolerate evil. If Jack was willing to tolerate it or refused to recognize it, then he was also contributing to it and he, too, was EVIL. If he didn’t mean for evil to succeed, then he was just STUPID.

tim gallagher says
Very witty (and accurate) comment about many on the left, Crusades Were Right. There is such a large amount of self-loathing and blaming the western world for all the world’s problems by some of the fools on the left that I can well imagine them thinking along those lines. As the Muslim scumbag is about to decapitate them, they would be thinking, oh, we, the people of the western world, must have somehow pissed you off to cause you to kill us like this. It must be our fault. Such people are pathetic and their naive idiocy endangers us all.
Lotus says
An event in which known killers (unrestrained) were paired with students for a creative writing workshop? Whose bright idea was that?
The mind boggles at such stupidity.
James says
It would be naive to think that jihadis are likely to be rehabilitated. The criminals that can best be rehabilitated are ones who believed in the laws they violated before they violated the laws. But the jihadis never believed in the laws they broke and the system that made the laws, before, during or after. One would not think that sending a Christian or Jew to jail would make them give up their religion, why should jihadis be different? The notion is simply Pollyanna-esque. The same naivety as the two women who went hiking in Morocco and were murdered by jihadis, or the couple that believed in human goodness and went bicycling in jihadi territory. The problem is that people are all good. only in the sense that an infant is an unwritten piece of paper. Once it is written on, it is no longer a blank sheet of paper. Scientists have found ancient texts on parchment that were erased may still be there and could be detected by special scanners. The same with jihadis. Even when their ideology is erased from consciousness, it may be there below the surface ready to be reactivated and go into effect, murdering well-meaning idiots. Like the soldiers in Afghanistan that suddenly attack the American and pro-government soldiers. Or the fort Hood officer who talked in favor of jihad, was not removed from the army and eventually committed jihad. The same thing he had apologized for.

The father is allowed his grief, but not his cloud of unknowing.
somehistory says
He wasn’t a “former criminal;” he was a criminal and a terrorist…till the second he died. Now he is a dead criminal and a dead terrorist. And this father should be ashamed, using the death of his own son to further the goals of moslims and helping others make excuses for their murderous behavior. He says he doesn’t want his son’ts death to be used as a “pretext,” but that is exactly what he is doing. He claims his son “wouldn’t want it.”
His son wanted these moslim creeps to make the ultimate change…not be given a get-out-of-jail-free card and use it to murder more people.
“detaining people unnecessarily’…” Not to worry. They won’t even be “detained necessarily.” The demonic creature who murdered his son wasn’t “detained necessarily.” He should never have been released.

I hope you aren’t suggesting that there is any “light” in the kind of “Christian” who wouldn’t want his murder used as a pretext to prevent another murder. I think Christ himself would be embarrassed by this man and his son. This was not his message. He never would have intended for people’s stupidity to be used to promote violence and evil. Would he?
Norger says
It’s just incredibly ironic that the object lesson for Cambridge University (i.e. the futility of attempting to “rehabilitate” jihad terrorists) is completely lost, even on the primary victims’ families.
Step 1: deny any link between jihad terror and Islamic theology mandating jihad terror. Step 2: forbid “Islamophobia” (I.e. any objective assessment of the possible link between the jihadi’s self-stated motives and what Islamic theology actually teaches). Step 3: hold candlelight vigils mourning the victims and vowing “solidarity” with “true” Muslims, (“we won’t be divided by hate”) Rinse. Wash. Repeat at the next terror attack.
John Treacy says
So sad. But at least this victim was not an innocent. He was an apologist for the criminally violent. As is his dad. Willful ignorance and self hatred are diseases of the democratic west.

His father is a monster in a way. What an awful, cowardly comment. No justice for his son, no lesson or action taken- just more senseless terrorism.

I try to understand the mind set of the father and i cannot grasp it. What would cause a father to think this way. Is it the total indifference to human life that is sweeping Western Culture? A father with more sympathy for killers than his own children blows my mind, but it seems all of Europe is becoming very sympathetic towards Islamic killers. Why?! This is insane.

No need for any of that – simply apply the existing laws, as opposed to looking the other way for fears of being called “racist”, “bigot”, “islamophobe”, etc. Why bother with stricter laws when the more lax ones are not applied to begin with?…
