This is all good fun, but it is useful to recall how Islamabad got its name in the first place. The History of Jihad explains how a Muslim historian, Saqa Mustad Khan, writing just after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb died in 1707, compiled a detailed record of Aurangzeb’s jihad activity from the emperor’s state archives. Khan recorded with obvious pride how, in 1670, the present capital of Pakistan got its name:
During this month of Ramzan [Ramadan] abounding in miracles, the Emperor as the promoter of justice and overthrower of mischief, as a knower of truth and destroyer of oppression, as the zephyr of the garden of victory and the reviver of the faith of the Prophet, issued orders for the demolition of the temple situated in Mathura, famous as the Dehra of Kesho Rai. In a short time, by the great exertions of his officers, the destruction of this strong foundation of infidelity was accomplished, and on its site a lofty mosque was built at the expenditure of a large sum. Praised be the august God of the faith of Islam, that in the auspicious reign of this destroyer of infidelity and turbulence, such a wonderful and seemingly impossible work was successfully accomplished. On seeing this instance of the strength of the Emperor’s faith and the grandeur of his devotion to God, the proud Rajas were stifled and in amazement they stood like images facing the wall. The idols, large and small, set with costly jewels which had been set up in the temple were brought to Agra, and buried under the steps of the mosque of the Begam Sahib, in order to be continually trodden upon. The name of Mathura was changed to Islamabad.
“Pakistan: Online Petition to change the name of ‘Islamabad’ to ‘Islamagood’ goes viral,” OpIndia, February 22, 2021:
Recently, an online petition to rename Pakistan’s National Capital Islamabad has begun doing the rounds of the internet.
The said petition was created by one Canada-based Bangladeshi national named Ayham Abrar and was directed to the Pakistani PM Imran Khan. The campaign sought to change the name of ‘Islama-bad’ to ‘Islama-good.’ Although the petition was started about 7 months ago, it got traction on social media in the last few days.
In his petition, Ayham claimed, “Islam is good. Pakistan love Islam. Why IslamaBAD? Love from Bangladesh.” After the campaign went viral on social media, it drew about 384 signatures by Monday morning. It must be mentioned that the petitioner had set a target of 500 signatures….
The name ‘Islamabad’ actually stands for the ‘City of Islam’. Unlike what Ayham had suggested, the name is a combination of two words ‘Islam’ and ‘Abad’ and not ‘Bad’.

I’m speechless. Idiocy of that magnitude tends to freeze the brain. “Islamarama” comes to mind, followed by “Islamagoodnessgraciousgreatballsoffire”, which might be characterized as the Golden Oldies response.

I’m doing what I can to hasten that day when Islam is found only in the history books at which time Islam will be known as Waslam.
Obviously that day will never come. Islam will never be eradicated, only controlled/contained.
tim gallagher says
A good and witty comment, Emilie. I am also hoping that Islam, this evil and backward ideology, will become Waslam. It should have gone the way of the old Aztec religion and already be in history’s rubbish bin. If Islam does become Waslam, as you put it, the world will be enormously improved. I agree also with your belief that Islam needs to be contained. Keep the disgusting ideology out of all non-Muslim countries and wait for it to, someday, become extinct. AS for this Pakistan, Islamabad nonsense, from everything I read about Pakistan, nothing can make that hellhole of a country less hideous, certainly not a name change.
john smith says
Agreed Tim, I also like Waslam. You came out with a good one there Emilie.
tim gallagher says
I thought that Emilie’s idea of Waslam was brilliant, john. I have to say that I never seem to come up with stuff as witty as that, but I enjoy it when other people do have those light bulb moments. All I can say is that if Islam was already Waslam this world would be a far better and happier place.

Why “badminton”? Minton is good, so let’s change the name to “goodminton”. And I don’t want to hear the word “badger” anymore. It is a beautiful animal, it’s “goodger”. Last year I was in Baden-Baden and I think the place doesn’t deserve the bad name. It’s Gooden-Gooden to me. In Gooden-Wüttenberg.
Michael Copeland says
This is going from Baden-Baden to Worsen-Worsen.

Reminds me of a PETA petition to rename Fishkill – a place in New York that was a major IBM research center – to Fishsave. Even though the name ‘Fishkill’ came from a Dutch word meaning ‘Fish creek’, and was not celebrating the slaughter of fish
The name ‘Islamabad’ had actually belonged to different cities: it used to be a name of Chittagong (today in Bangladesh), and I had no idea that it was assigned to Mathura as well. In India, any city w/ a name ending in -abad is known to have been renamed by muslims, and in UP and MP, they’ve been undergoing name changes: Allahabad has been renamed Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya. Quite a few of these names are there for cities in both India and Pakistan, so as India gets rid of them, Pakistan can enjoy sole possession of those names
It’s amusing that a Bangladeshi person has no idea of what -abad means, even if he lives in Canada. Aside from the fact that Bangladeshis have nothing better to do than suggest name changes of places outside their own country
Singh T. Junior says
Ahmadabad, the capital of Gujrat, India still needs to be renamed Karunavati. That was the original name before moslem invaders and terrorists changed it.
Infidel says
Gujarat has only had BJP governments since 2000, and yet, they’ve not changed this name. Which is a disgrace, given that Ahmadabad is a heavily Hindu, not muslim city
Viktor Smith says
This is indeed very surprising! Why has the BJP not done anything about this yet? That too after ruling for so long.
As an Ex-C*risti@n ( now Deist) from India, I hope India remains safe from THAT PARTICULAR religion.
SKA says
It is also known as Amdavad now.
Michael Copeland says
Is the suggester’s country now Canadabad?
Infidel says
Or Canadagood? Or as a lot of us brand them, Kanuckistan

How true to form. Everything bad will be called GOOD, everything good will be called BAD. This was inevitable, but I thought it would be really, really further down in the Worlds list of makeovers.

Yes, the Prophet Isaiah wrote it and Jesus quoted it. And we are witnessing the fulfilment of those prophecies.
william carr says
Two minutes research reveals that the suffix ‘bad’ simply means town or city, Like ton, burgh or by (scandinavian) and was in use long before the British brought English to the sub continent.
Infidel says
The guy Ayham who put together this petition writes like he’s barely literate: “Islam is good. Pakistan love Islam. Why IslamaBAD? Love from Bangladesh.”
You’re right that there were a lot of cities in the subcontinent ending in -abad before the Brits arrived, although in the case of Islamabad, that was a city built from scratch after Pakistan became independent and got the name
mortimer says
Such simple-mindedness. Let us hope for a day when ‘Islam’ will no longer be a part of any name of anyone or anything.

Allahabad, city in India in the State of Uttar Pradesh.
So is Allah bad?
Infidel says
He is, but same thing – city of allah. Incidentally, that city has had its name reverted to Prayagraj. There are a couple of more cities in Pakistan by the name ‘Allahabad’
gravenimage says
Of course, “abad”–not just “bad”, incidentally–just means “place of”.
