Research is underway beside Karluk Lake, in an ancestral house that is about 500 years old. Intern Albert Simeonoff is learning to excavate and tools are starting to appear – including this large slate ulu. Quyanaasinaq — many thanks to Koniag for supporting the project.

Germaine Salmine is supporting the Alutiiq Museum renovation. She says, "preserving and celebrating our culture is vital for future generations. It will ensure our rich history and traditions are honored and shared. Although my grandparents and great-grandmother never had the opportunity to see the Alutiiq Museum, I am confident they would have wanted their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and future generations to access this valuable resource." You found an artifact! Now what? Take a couple photographs (with a pen or a penny for scale). Make some notes. Put a dot on a map. And leave the object in place. Artifacts belong to landowners and it is illegal and damaging to collect them. Instead, document your find and report it to an archaeologist or the Alutiiq Museum. Respect and Protect Kodiak's history. Supported by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gExMN8Qa

Our crew of archaeologists, graduate students, and an intern left for Karluk Lake this afternoon. They will spend the next two weeks studying an ancestral settlement near the lake outlet, thanks to generous support from Koniag. We'll share the finds as news and photos make their way back to Kodiak. Stay tuned for updates from the field.

The new Alutiiq Museum continues to take shape. Our audience asked for a classroom to hold workshops, language lessons, potlucks, lectures, and much more. This addition to the building will provide that important space. Learn more about the renovation, see a list of our generous supporters, and add your name to the project. It all on our website: https://lnkd.in/gz3F4_HF
