Dr. Andrea Spencer, Vice Chair for Research, The Pritzker Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, received a $3.8 million, five-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to investigate the intersection of racism and ADHD in driving increased suicidality in young Black children. The study also aims to identify protective factors that lower the risk of suicide in these kids, and inform new guidelines on suicide prevention and risk reduction. “Black children may face a disproportionate impact from ADHD-related risk for suicidality due to structural and interpersonal racism," Spencer said. "We hope that data from our study will provide support for earlier screening, especially for Black kids with ADHD. We also hope to inform new policy and school-based recommendations to prevent suicide in these children.” https://lnkd.in/gcvuFipK Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute

Lurie Children’s is cheering on wrestler and former patient, Payton Jacobson, in the Paris Olympics this week! Payton’s athletic ability stood out from a young age, and sports and wrestling became his passion as early as grade school. When Payton was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease at 9-years-old he had already won youth state titles including wrestling. Perthes disease, is a condition where the hip may deteriorate over time and lose its shape, which affects function, walking and movement. A doctor in their home state of Wisconsin told the family he may never play sports again. Devastated, Payton’s family visited Lurie Children’s for a second opinion, where pediatric orthopedic expert Dr. John Sarwark restored hope, the hope they had been looking for. Dr. Sarwark initiated an approach to treating the condition, notably an aggressive conservative approach, having the family incorporate therapy, and daily set of vigorous stretches in their routine as well as medical monitoring. Meanwhile, Payton was encouraged to continue sports and in particular, wrestling. With Payton’s hard work and determination, and the support from his parents and medical team, he continued to wrestle while the condition ran its course, taking minimal time off. Earlier this year, Payton defeated his opponents at the U.S. Olympic Trials for Greco Roman wrestling and qualified to compete at the Paris Summer Olympics as a U.S. Olympic athlete. Reflecting on all that Payton has had to overcome to get to his point, making his first Olympics is now much more special for him and his family. Lurie Children’s is proud to see past patients like Payton grow and achieve their potential. Watch Payton compete in the Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling 87kg category on August 7.

Analysis of over 40,000 youth suicides finds that the large majority lacked prior mental health diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of access to regular wellness checks, #mentalhealth screenings, and treatment. The study was published in JAMA Network Open. The research co-authors, including Jennifer Hoffmann, MD, MS, Elizabeth Alpern, MD, MSCE, and Karen Sheehan, MD, MPH, reiterated the need to reduce easy access to firearms, the most common method for youth suicide. https://lnkd.in/gr2wBiDp Ann & Robert H. Monica and Cristian found out through a 12-week ultrasound that their unborn baby would have a cleft lip, among other possible issues. As first-time parents, this was overwhelming for Monica and her husband to digest. The couple was referred to The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health (CIFH) for further prenatal testing, where they sat down with a team of multidisciplinary specialists and had all their questions answered. They felt more confident after coming to The Chicago Institute and developing a treatment plan and timeline for their unborn baby. “We knew we were in great hands,” Monica said. Thanks to The CIFH, when Mateo was born, he was already connected with Lurie Children’s Pediatric Plastic Surgery Team to correct the cleft lip and palate. He had his first surgery to repair his cleft lip at six months old. Following his first surgery, Mateo’s parents and care team helped him through a tough recovery as he had to relearn how to eat and drink. Despite challenges in his recovery, his parents saw his resilience and strength in their young child and knew that he was receiving the best care possible. Today, Mateo is the happiest toddler and recently celebrated his second birthday. He is meeting his developmental milestones and is growing up to be a kind and loving brother to his younger sister. Mateo has had two surgeries, one to correct his cleft lip and one to correct his cleft palate. His appointments continue with the Cleft and Craniofacial team, which includes plastic surgeons, ENT specialists, audiologists, oral surgeons, dentists, orthodontists, speech therapists, psychologists and others who provide the full spectrum for children with cleft lip and palate. Mateo has a lot to look forward to as he grows up. July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Prevention Month, and Lurie Children’s is proud to provide exquisite, multidisciplinary care to patients like Mateo.
