Research shows that Black people have better health outcomes and receive medical care more frequently when they are treated by Black physicians. Yet only 7% of medical school graduates and less than 6% of all practicing doctors are Black. To help diversify the medical field and advance health and racial wealth equity, our Greenwood Initiative announced a $600 million commitment to help Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science build their endowments. The investment will also support the creation of a new medical school in New Orleans, the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine.

Today, we announced a $600 million gift to four historically Black medical schools, including the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Hear firsthand from Morehouse School of Medicine’s President Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, on why this gift is a “game changer": https://lnkd.in/exAP4ZMS

🩺 Nearly 50% of Black physicians have attended historically Black medical schools. But since the early 1900s, underinvestment and other discriminatory practices led to the closing of ten Black medical schools in the U.S. We're making a historic investment in the nation’s historically Black medical schools. The new funding will more than double three of the four schools’ endowments, and ensure they continue their commitment to train the next generation of Black doctors. https://lnkd.in/euDDW_mq

JUST ANNOUNCED: We’re committing $600M to the country’s four historically Black medical schools: Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine. We will also provide a grant for the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, in development now. This investment is part of our Greenwood Initiative, which seeks to advance racial wealth equity by addressing systemic underinvestment in Black institutions and communities. Increasing these schools’ endowments will strengthen their financial stability and institutional capacity to respond to the rising costs of tuition, innovative research, and operations. https://lnkd.in/euDDW_mq
