A journey fueled by love. As an infant, all odds were against Dalton as he faced life-threatening hardships. He was adopted by his parents and has since thrived with their love and support. The family partnered with ChildServe and found a support system full of hope, joy, love, and endless opportunities for Dalton. Today, ChildServe - Iowa City provides specialty healthcare to over 1,200 children and families from Johnson County and 46 surrounding counties. 🎉 We offer a unique set of more than a dozen services. The need for specialty pediatric services in Iowa continues to rise. Our expanded space – completed earlier this year – will allow for additional therapists and team members to be hired, opening crucial availability for children who are currently on waiting lists “Our team is thrilled to have more room and customized spaces to do the work we are so passionate about. “We lit the match, and ChildServe carries the torch,” said Denny, one of the parents who helped create a non-profit that would later become ChildServe - Ames. 31 years ago, a group of five families recognized a gap in the Ames community for services caring for children with complex medical needs. The families worked together to fill this need in the community and created a summer daycare program called Community Options. The company quickly grew beyond the original families and added a weekend respite option. Through the brain power and passionate care of these families, the building blocks of what is now ChildServe - Ames were created. Recently, the families gathered for a tour of ChildServe - Ames to see first-hand how we've grown from what they started. We can't stop smiling after last week's Nurse Camp at ChildServe! 😁 🩺 Participants spent the day learning in fun-filled activity stations. They learned all about g-tubes, hand washing, feeding, wound care, X-rays, Hoyer lifts, the importance of communication and so much more! At the end of camp, families were invited to a pinning ceremony where campers were recognized for their engaged learning and new nursing skills. "Over 15 nurses from all over the organization volunteered to help with Nurse Camp. Our nurses had a blast spending time with the kids and sharing their knowledge and passion for nursing," said Stephanie Nemmers-Bello, ChildServe Director of Nursing. "It was so rewarding to watch the campers’ excitement for learning and to know that we helped expand their understanding of the nursing profession. We already started planning for next year’s camp, and we hope to make it even bigger and better!" ChildServe is happy to remind families of the adult-sized changing table available at the Iowa State Fair! We're proud to partner with organizations like Changing Spaces Iowa and the Iowa State Fair to advocate for inclusion and promote equitable access to restrooms for all families. An accessible changing table will allow families to enjoy the fair comfortably and safely. 📍Families will find the changing station in the First Aid Building marked with a red cross under the Sky Glider near the Fun Forest. It is fully automatic and moves from six inches to table height. The changing station is open from 9 a.m. - midnight each day of the fair.
