This week, multiple members of our team joined the Lavender Law Conference in Washington, DC and spoke with attendees of four exciting panels discussing how we use the law to build a democracy that’s inclusive of all people, including LGTBQ+ people. #LavenderLaw #LavLaw

We use the law to advance a bold, vibrant democracy for all people.
About us
Democracy depends on a government that works for all people. Since 2017, Democracy Forward has filed over 650 legal actions and records requests challenging unlawful acts, fought vigorously in court on behalf of those harmed, and notched victories that have improved lives and protected the rule of law. In statehouses, courtrooms, and communities across the country, we still see threats to democracy every day. Democracy Forward is expanding to use new strategies that oppose abuses of power and fight for the promise of democracy on behalf of all Americans.

I had such a wonderful time at my first Lavender Law conference moderating a (very timely) First Amendment panel featuring Anya Marino, Taylor Brown, and Paula Greisen! What a pleasure to represent Democracy Forward alongside Skye Perryman (she/her) and Sunu Chandy, who also had excellent panels, and to connect with so many other friends. Thank you to all who came or contributed!!

On the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we honor the legacy of civil rights activists, like Rep. John Lewis, and all the courageous people who put their lives on the line to bring our nation closer to its promise by enshrining the right of all people to vote in law. The still-unrealized promise of the VRA inspires us to continue to counter the far-right legal movement’s attacks on the right to vote in courtrooms and communities across the country. When we fight for this fundamental right, democracy wins.

On this day in 2009, Justice Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court as the first Latina to serve on the nation’s highest court. Today, her latest striking dissent on presidential immunity reminds us why we must not give in to far-right extremism.
“With fear for our democracy, I dissent.” - Justice Sonia Sotomayor concludes her dissenting opinion on presidential immunity in ‘Trump v. U.S.’

“It is imperative that people in communities have the tools to push back on unlawful and harmful extremism… including through filing litigation.” – Skye Perryman (she/her) in CNN on our work to ensure people have the tools they'd need to fight extremism in court https://lnkd.in/emg55g7a

“There are plans within Project 2025 to reverse core work for progress on civil rights. There are plans to adopt models like what we’ve seen in Florida and Texas with respect to seeking to kind of rewrite curriculum and rewrite history.” More from Skye Perryman (she/her): https://lnkd.in/eXKUH9zC

Anti-equity organizations and special interests have relied on loud rhetoric and fear tactics to compensate for their legal losses in cases attempting to undermine DEI and other programs. More in our latest report on cases we’ve tracked and analyzed: https://lnkd.in/eUSK66Vb
