MTA Maryland and the Purple Line recently provided a peek at a future Purple Line railcar that in a few years will be part of the Maryland suburbs’ light rail line. The line, which will link to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) heavy rail as well as MARC, Amtrak and local bus services, is slated to open in 2027. Each railcar will be 142 feet long — the longest of its kind in the U.S. — and accommodate 400+ passengers. The railcars will also be electric, making for a smoother, quieter ride. tinyurl.com/5exnntc5

Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

We crunched the numbers on who rides transit in Rowlett, Farmers Branch, Plano and Irving, TX. Last year, people in those cities took 16,000 trips every day on DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) light rail or buses. 42% lack a car, and 85% make less than the U.S. median annual income. Thanks, DART, for helping people get to jobs, school & other important destinations.

Throughout #busmonth, we highlighted dozens of projects that will put more buses on the roads and improve the facilities that keep them in tiptop shape. Many of those buses will run on clean-and-green technology that helps slow climate change, improves air quality and makes for a better rider experience.

Congrats to South Dakota Department of Transportation for receiving $1.6 million in FTA funding to add several propane-powered buses to River Cities Public Transit, Prairie Hills Transit & People's Transit’s bus fleets. The federal support will help replace outdated diesel buses so the agencies can better serve a growing rural ridership with more environmentally friendly buses. #busmonth tinyurl.com/busmonth2024

Gymnastics and transit buses are the stuff of memes? At the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, Simone Biles became the first woman to complete the Yurchenko Double Pike Vault. Social media is buzzing with her achievement and noting she vaulted 12 feet -- as high as a 🚌. That’s certainly something to ponder the next time your bus approaches. Congrats to Ms. Biles and the rest of the amazing athletes. FTA looks forward to supporting clean and green transportation in 4 years for the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. 📷: Champaign Urbana Mass Transit District

As we enjoy the final days of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, we are taking a look back at how FTA and the transit industry supported the U.S.-hosted games 28 years ago. For the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, FTA, MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) and the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games teamed up to ensure athletes, family members and spectators could access the event sites. Thanks to transit systems and private operators across the country, MARTA received more than 1,000 buses on loan to run daily shuttle service. FTA grants supported the expansion of MARTA’s rail system, helping prepare it to carry 300% more riders during the Games. MARTA’s rail and bus lines and the Olympics shuttle system helped more than 1 million people move about the city every day so no one had to miss a double tuck or javelin toss.
