We honor life through donation.

About us

Our Core Purpose: We honor life through donation. Our Core Values: Determined, Compassionate, Professional Gift of Life is the state's only federally designated organ and tissue recovery program, providing all services necessary for organ donation to occur in Michigan. We're a non-profit organization working 24/7/365 as a liaison between donors, the state's hospitals and transplant centers. Gift of Life was incorporated in 1971 by Michigan transplant surgeons to provide a network for sharing kidneys. Today, Gift of Life recovers more than 900 organs every year for transplantation from 300 or more donors, saving hundreds of lives. Bone, skin and other tissue also is recovered from nearly 1,000 donors, helping to significantly improve the lives of thousands of seriously injured and sick recipients. Gift of Life also works with Eversight Michigan to facilitate cornea and eye donation. Additionally, Gift of Life maintains and grows the Michigan Organ Donor Registry in partnership with the Michigan Secretary of State. The registry is a confidential database of state residents who have expressed their desire to someday help others by becoming an organ, eye and tissue donor.

Some Catholic Health hospitals have started placenta donation programs to help patients heal wounds and advance medical research. Trinity Health Ann Arbor, a member of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, is one such hospital that has facilitated 278 placenta donations so far in 2024. Did you know that a single placenta has the potential to help heal wounds, treat diabetic ulcers, address eye injuries, aid in dental procedures, and contribute to the advancement of other medical treatments? “Failing systems do not have 13 record-breaking years in a row. They do not facilitate 128 organ transplants every day. And they do not provide life-saving gifts to almost 40,000 people last year.” Watch the full Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) President’s Address on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eMB8akX7

Our system is not broken. Each year, we are moving closer to our goal of 50,000 annual organs transplanted in 2026, and we must continue our efforts to support this growth. AOPO President Dorrie D. says it perfectly: “Failing systems do not have 13 record-breaking years in a row. They do not facilitate 128 organ transplants every day. And they do not provide life-saving gifts to almost 40,000 people last year.” Watch the full AOPO President’s Address on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eMB8akX7

The U.S. organ donation and transplantation system is undergoing a lot of transformation. Dorrie D., President of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) and President and CEO of Gift of Life Michigan, recently spoke with the New Hampshire Bulletin about efforts by CMS to assess OPO performance and underscored the challenges of capturing an OPO’s complex work. The U.S. organ donation and transplantation system is undergoing a lot of transformation. AOPO President Dorrie D. recently spoke with the New Hampshire Bulletin about efforts by CMS to assess OPO performance and underscored the challenges of capturing an OPO’s complex work. She highlighted the rise in organ non-utilization, which affects an OPO's standing and ultimately hinders donation and the saving of lives through transplantation. “When we have to go back to a donor family, a grieving donor family, and thank them for the gifts that they’ve given and report that sadly, we were unable to use them, that is a tragedy,” Dils said. “It’s also a tragedy for the people who die waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. And somehow, we need to create regulations that improve the entire ecosystem, not just one part of it.” Thank you, Annmarie Timmins, for the opportunity to discuss OPO reforms and the future of donation. In its first year, the Check Your Heart Act inspired more than 13,000 people to add their names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry for the first time, and more than 170,000 more reaffirmed their decision to donate life. We are deeply grateful to the Michigan Association of CPAs (MICPA) for being valued partners in our mission to honor life through donation and for getting the word out that doing your taxes can help save lives. Workplace partnerships like we have with MICPA make initiatives like the Check Your Heart Act successful. Is your organization is interested in joining us as workplace partners? At a heartfelt gathering in Linden, Michigan, Gloria Kirshman and Carla Bussell met for the first time at Kirshman’s home. Both women share an extraordinary bond, having received life-saving organ transplants from the same donor on the same day. Kirshman, 69, who received a heart transplant, and Bussell, 52, who underwent a double lung transplant, were joined by the family of their donor, Suzanne Karrer. Suzanne’s selfless act not only gave Kirshman and Bussell a second chance at life, but it also created a lasting bond between the recipients and the donor’s family. 💻: https://lnkd.in/gGWfDZzP Register your decision to help save a life at golm.org/register. #DonateLife #CheckYourHeart
