CEO of Grammarly | Enterprise-grade AI that moves work forward

Open source brings sunlight to what’s often a black box of AI development. To understand if an AI tool is safe, secure, and trustworthy, transparency is vital. And technology’s best model for transparency is the use of open source. That’s why open source is the future of AI. We’ve just seen two great signs of it: Meta released Llama 3.1, and the FTC just recognized open source for its role in driving innovation, competition, and consumer choice. But there’s more to do to address security concerns head-on and ensure that the industry is moving toward a friendlier open-source landscape. History shows us that open source is the safest way to deploy tech. When we open-sourced Chrome during my time at Google, there were concerns raised about potential security issues that could be exploited by malicious actors. The concerns were understandable, but ultimately, open source proved to be the best way to harden the system. A similar story played out with the use of Linux in the enterprise. We should take these lessons to heart as we think about the security of open-weight models. Having numerous teams test and harden these systems is ultimately the proven way to get to a more secure state than private models, which only a few can test or validate. At Grammarly, we use open-source models in our product. We’re also open-sourcing our own models to deliver #responsibleAI writing assistance to developers across the industry, making products safer for all of us. (More on one of those models here: https://gram.ly/3YvncLx) When built upon a strong foundation of privacy and security, #opensource pushes the industry forward, into the sunlight—toward safer, smarter, more innovative AI.

We had a great time hosting The Wharton School's San Francisco Wharton Global Youth Program participants at our SF hub. This group of inspiring students shared lots of great ideas (and product feedback)! 💪

What better way to close out our San Francisco Innovation and Startup Culture program than a trip to a start-up that many high school students know and love – Grammarly! Grammarly is an AI writing partner that helps people at every stage of the writing process, from blank page to final draft. This year our San Francisco students were invited downtown to the Grammarly headquarters where they presented their final pitches for the ventures they developed over the two-week program. We heard pitches for innovative business ideas ranging from an AI-powered meal planning service, to FinTech tools to educate new investors and everything in between. Students got to tour a REAL San Francisco tech office and meet Grammarly executives like Matt Rosenberg (Chief Revenue Officer), Cliff Archey (Grammarly for Education's Lead Product Marketing Manager), and Jenny Maxwell (Head of Grammarly for Education). Each staff member detailed their work and careers and engaged our students on a variety of subjects including Grammarly’s business model, the use of #AI in education, YouTube marketing strategies, and how AI can be used in high school classrooms and undergraduate classes. The office visit was also an important opportunity for students to provide valuable feedback on their use of Grammarly Premium, which Grammarly provided for the duration of their time in the Wharton Global Youth Program this summer. Thank for hosting us, Grammarly! We hope to see you again next year! !🌁⛴🌆 #WhartonGlobalYouth #AI #Innovation #BusinessEducation
